I bought a female lyretail swordtail today. I was wondering what kind of male will increase my chances of having baby lyretails. I heard many rumors that a male lyretail cannot breed properly and the chances of them fertilizing is little. I asked the owner about this and he said my best chances are cross breeding her with a hi-fin swordtail male to get more lyretail babies. He also said that the only time a male lyretail can breed very well is when he is still young and his breeding *thingy* isn't too long and deformed yet. What do you guys think? what kind should I buy to get some lyretail babies.? But the owner also said the females just had babies in the tank a few days ago, and since a female can store sperm, should I just wait and see if babies will pop out of her?

well, i would wait a bit to see if she is still holding some sperm which she probably is. but i think a green sword would be okay? but im really bad with livebearers so yeah x_X

how long will it take for her to self-fertile herself? and right now she is kinda skinny. what should I feed her to plump her up?

try foods like bloodworms and conditioning foods like that. i forgot what the period of pregnancy is for livebearers. around 3 weeks? not sure

So right after she gives birth she can self fertile? By the way I went back to the store to buy another female. That one didn't look pregnet but this morning before school I discovered about 4 babies. I didn't have time to scoop then out. (I was almost late for the bus) But after school I came back to check up on them and There they were all alive. So I figure they are good at hiding and I left them in there.

And I am feeding my first female brine shirmp. will this help?

1st: A female can hold sperm for up to a whopping 7 - 8 batches of fry!
2nd: COOL, how long have you had the female? If the babies lived the day they should be fine, for a little while at least.
FINALLY: That is fine, I prefer bloodworms, but that is just fine.

GOOD LUCK :D , blitztidus

1st female I have her for 3 days.
2nd female I had her for 2 days. (She gave birth)
thanks for your reply. Can't wait until the babies mature. I think I have 3 orange and 1 mickey mouse.
BTW both females are Mickey Mouse. I just LOVE this breed of swordtails. These fish and German rams are my current favorite fish. Are Lyretails found commonly or are they uncommon? It's rare for me to find them. (good condtion ones.) most I've seen are some-what deformed in a way.

Not all male Lyretails are unable to mate, just some/most. It's a matter of finding the right male. If you get one, that will definitely give you the best chances of getting Lyretails, and then perhaps you can get another few breeding males from that batch. It's really a gamble if you breed the female to another male. Who knows what that would throw. :dunno:

Yeah true. I could never find a good male in stores. Thier breeding *thing* are always deformed looking.? But lucky My new female had some babies. I hope I get some males out of that. And I will love to keep this micky mouse breed going. I can never find these guys anywhere?

Gonopodium? Male Lyretails almost always seen to have a kink to their gonopodium, at least in my experience. This is, however, what makes it harder for them to breed in some cases. Can you describe the 'deformed' part more?

Also, you never know what could come out of the female's babies when you breed them again. You may see Lyretails, but perhaps that won't be carried on to their fry. Genetics are such fun things. :p

I've never heard of Mickey Mouse Swordtails...are you sure it isn't a Platy/Variatus Platy/Swordie-Platy hybrid? Any chance of a picture?

By deform I mean thiey *Gonopodium* is curved, bent or way too long and the end is curved. I wish I could get you guys some pics. I never heard of them Either but the owner of the pet store said they are called Lyretail Micky Mouse. I searched on the internet and can't find lyre tails that are micky mouse. I went back to catch all my babies that my second female had. It looks like out of the six I caught, one was mickymouse. The other were marigold. both the female are very large, they are about 4-5 inches.

There fore it might be a new unfamialir crossbreed. know most swordtails are crossed with platies to get some of their markings.

Alright, I asked my sis to take a pic of my fish. She used her phone cam, so sorry for the low-quality

Those are REALLY pretty fish. Can you also get a pic of the male? I love swordtails, especially lyretails, sadly I don't have any, but would LOVE THEM!!!

Thats the problem. I can't find a good male for them. My second feamle had 6 babies the day after I bought her and I am hoping to get a male from those babies. When I bought them I did see a really beautiful tuxedo male lyre but his Gonopodium was very long? I didn't think that he could of breed. But when I went back, He was gone. I kinda regret it.
