I was out at one of my local creeks yesterday looking for shrimp and instead collected another plant that I want to grow in my tank. The only problem is the best way to clean the plant to try and ensure I don't intorduce any nasties. I have already given the plant a good wash under the tap, and have picked off the seed shrimp looking critters (they where orange and black instead of white like the ones that are already in one of my tanks) and checked it throughly for snails and eggs. The plant is now soaking in some straight tap water, is there any other things I can do to try and make sure it's clean?

Got any pics??

a good soak should sort it. There is some nice native plants from your neck of the woods.

I'll get some pics once its planted into one of my tanks, it looks a little sad at the mo just floating in a bucket of water

Some pictures of the new plant temporarily planted in one of the tanks.

thats an interesting looking plant.

looks a little like a cross between an Aponogeton boivinianus and something...do you know what it is?

Not a clue what it is at the moment but I should be able to find out what it is pretty easily...I hope. It had a small white flower but because it's now in deeper water the flower isn't so flash. Some of the leaves also have a red tinge. I will give the glass a clean on the tank and try to get some better pics later. And yep I thought it was an interesting plant to add to the tanks, I might even be able to get some more and get quite a few going in my different tanks. I just hope the bristle noses don't eat it to death, they seem to have taken a liking to it already.

I am pretty sure the plant is Ottelia alismoides, and if not that exact one then a very close cultivar/ species

A better picture of the same plant.

The guppies are just Diva's that have to be in every shot  .

Is that an exotic or native? I hope it grows well in your tank, I think my bettas could take full advantage of those large leaves.

Pretty sure its a native, but they are found all over Asia and are feral in parts of the USA, so far only the juvi bristle noses have really shown an interest just as well really becuase my huge female BN's would destroy it in a night if they liked the taste of it.

Another plant I discovered in one of my local creeks, it appears to be some sort of sedge.

So far the juvi bristle noses don't seem interested in eating it, so I don't know if that means it tastes nasty or if they are still liking the elodea and fish food more.

you are sooo lucky where you live to have these native plants.

I guess I am, there is another couple of plants I have been eyeing off at the creek, just need the water levels to dro a bit more so I can reach the spot where they grow. I will be interesting to see how this sedge grows in the tank an if I have to keep pruning it back like Val.

I've heard of people cleaning plants in a watered down bleach solution before, but it seems a bit OTT to me, long as you picked it from a healthy body of water and put it through quarantine
