Hi,

After cycling my new tank for 6 weeks, all parameters fine; i added two clowns.

One died within 48hrs and the second a day later with what looks like velvet desease.

I think i did all i could to help acclimatise them. (dripping water for an hour or so, lights out on the tank etc etc) Not sure what else i could have done.

No detectable Ammonia, Nitrite or Nitrate...

Ok so moving on, How long should I leave the tank fishless before adding more? Can the parasites that cause velvet live for long periods without host fish?? Should I add a UV to clean the tank???

Appreciate your help as i don't want it to go wrong a second time.

Hi, try some eSHA OODINEX. I have some and the box says eESHA OODINEX WIDE RANGE MARINE TREATMENT Invertebrate Friendly, which i guess is what your looking for. It cost me £5 and can treat a 175 gallon tank.
It helps to treat whitespot, skin problems, fungus, finrot, dropsy and oodinium.
So i guess its what you would be looking for in a treatment. :good:

I see a problem here. Cycling for six weeks is completely unnecessary and will have killed the majority of your bacterial stock. The result is a small re-cycle, or at least the potential for one, when fish are added. But to be honest that probably didn't affect your clowns and judging by your test readings may not have happened at all.

Contrary to popular opinion, I tend to view clowns as rather disease-ridden fish when without an anemone. I have owned many clowns in the past and the only one yet to truly thrive, with no disease ever, is my maroon which has a host. Not that they can't be maintained without one, just that unhosted clowns dying of disease is not too rare in my experience. Similarly your acclimation was satisfactory and not to blame.

If you want my oppinion about clownfish and disease, the problem is more a result of tank raise clowns. Yes, yes, I know everyone thinks TR clowns are hardier cause they grew up in a fishtank. Where they really grew up in was a sterile system exposed to few pathogens. They have immune systems just like ours, and IMO, without enough pathogens for them to fight at a young age, they dont build up antibodies, are very prone to catching new ones when they get to the home of the aquarist. People are the same way; little kids who have had little exposure to diseases get sick very often, while adults whom have already been exposed to a majority of bugs out there don't get sick so often.

Solution; just like with any other purchase make sure the fish has been with the LFS for at LEAST 2 weeks before taking it home. I prefer 4 weeks, but that's just me.
