i just recently went into the world of cichlids today since my clowns have gotten a bit semi aggressive. so i wanted to put some pics to see what you guys think. (good deal or not?) i got all these fish for 50% off from a private fish store owner who was SUPER informative. he also had buy one get one free on frozen food and omega one veggie flakes, which seem to have better ingredients :good:

i got 2 bolivian rams (about $4), 2 small angels (about $2), and 2 green severums (about $3).

one of my rams

Are these for the 30 gal? Cause if yes then you don't have room for the angels or the sevs. The rams would be ok just watch for some signs of agression as might occur if both are males they might squabble a little over territory.

The angels will prob get too big for the tank.

The sevs will also get too big but also will get very agressive and will cause lots of harm to your other stocking when get close to maturity.

So a few options:
  • Take the angels and sevs back to the lfs and keep jus the rams in the 30G with your other stocking.
  • Buy a bigger tank (maybe 55G, not really sure for angels) and keep the angels but still take the angels back. Keep rams in 30G
  • keep the rams and the sevs, rams in the 30G and sevs will need prob atleast a 90G to 120G(not sure how big green sevs get, but assuming comprable to other sevs.

i wouldn't put angels in a 30g, it needs to be 18" tall and to get that with 30g it's not gonna be a long tank, and they also need the swimming room. I wouldn't put them in anything less than a 40g and preferably a 50g.

why does everyone worry about size? i realize that servs get big, but NOT overnight! it will take them YEARS to get as big as they did on display at the petshop. and my tank is a hex, so it's tall enough for angels, they're doing fine. eventually i will upgrade to a bigger tank and it will be in PLENTY of time before the servs even reach 3 inches. and everywhere i read says that servs are peaceful and they seem to be just fine in my tank. right now all these fish are babies, not even over 1 inch, so they're good for now.

i updated my profile!! sorry, i don't have THAT many fish in there! i got another tank for the guppies

It takes years for them to get to their max size yes, but they do most of their growing in the first year as all fish do..... you can't plan on years later rehoming them. Its better just to start them off in an appropriate sized tank instead of running the risk of stunting them. If you care about the fish either get a bigger tank or take them back to the lfs. And if your "buddy" at the lfs sold you them with knowing that you only have a 30G, then he isnt your friend, he is just looking to make money off of you cause he should know what I'm saying and that he shouldnt sell them to you.....

i really wish people would buy the big tank before the big fish!

so many people say there gona upgrade when the fish is bigger.

why not jus wait till you have the big tank and then get the fish for it.

2 angels are fine in a 30g just sevs need a tank of 75g upwards.

For a 12 inch severum maybe...But most don't get over 7' So i would say 40 gal atleast for a pair and preferably 55 gallon..
stargirly1208 is right though, they should be fine for some months to come. But that isn't a very good mix really.Even though sevs and most fish do most the growing in there first 1-2 years i wouldn't think they would get over 6' in a year...

Whe i said that i mant everyhing he has with angels and sevs it would nee a 75g

ok number one i'm a girl... and number 2 they DON'T grow that big in a year!! go yell at the girl who has 3 clowns in a 20 gallon. just because you have more fish by your name doesn't make you an expert ya know!

Your severums will be stunted within 6 months and die within a year GUARANTEED.

They stand NO CHANCE whatsoever of living more then a year in that tank. NO CHANCE.

You have a really bad attitude about this too.. people are trying to help you, and you're giving these immature sassy responses.

Don't post here anymore if you don't want anyones advice.

i'm just saying as soon as someone posts something up here, like nice pictures, everyone has to attack and find something bad about it. nothing ever positive.... "They need a tank with at least 30 gallons." and this information here is from THIS site...Fish forum info

thank you for being the only one to say something positive for once :) , this site is full of pessimists.

That 30 hex will be fine for a couple of angels as long as they are compatable. It's a tall tank, angels are tall fish. Angels can have aggression issues like any other cichlids, the two you have may get along fine, they may get aggressive when they mature. You probably have 5-6 months before you have to worry about this.

That tank is not suitable for sevs, the need more swimming room, being a more horizontally oriented fish. Being cichlids they are also messy eaters, requiring double the filtration of a community tank. Plan on having a larger tank in a couple of months.

The biggest problem with hex tanks is surface area per gallon, you can't stock a hex the same as you would a traditional rectangle tank of the same capacity due to this. If that is an All-Glass tank it is sold as a 35 gallon.
