I think he's a really nice find, and for once the camera hasn't changed the colour!

See what I mean about the pearlescent colouring?

His fins need a bit of TLC, but luckily I had managed to get him the day after he arrived to live in his cup. So he's not in a really bad way.

lol, that's alright.

No, they don't need their tank cycled, and prefer to not have a filter because of the current. But because of having no filter, you really need to keep a strict regime with water changes.

What would these water changes be like? 100% how often?

Effectively they are like goldfish as in their tolerance of water?

Not quite like Goldfish, they need a heater and some types of tail types like Crown tails can be affected by water conditions. They are easily hit by things like fin rot as they're fins are delicate. There are things that have to be "right" for them.

Would you mind explaining these things that need to be "right".

What can they stand in the way of Nitrate etc... Or can they adapt to them too?

I've not really had any problems with water stats with them, keeping the stats in the norm for tropical fish has worked fine for me. I'm not sure about specific PH for them, again, mine is around 6 or 7 for all my tanks. Heat wise, around 28 degrees celsius. A good thing to have on hand for them is melafix, in case of any torn fins.

They are most definitely adaptable fish, I've never heard anyone worry about their PH level or water stats unless its been a sudden, unknown death.

Obviously the water has to be conditioned before adding the fish also. Water changes, I do 20% every few days in the unfiltered tanks, and a 100% water change once a week.

So I could fill the tank with water straight from the tap... Add a bit of water curer. Heat it until it's 28 degrees. (Add what's needed) And then just pop the betta in?

Well, thats what I do with a water change, and once the temp is right and has been stable for a while I'll float a tub/bag with betta in before letting them loose.
