New Blue Sponge Fo My Filter

bought a new blue sponge for my filter to replace the charcoal one in my juwel internal filter,the problem is that the blue one is twice as thick as the charcoal one,do i just cut it in half so its the same thickness as the charcoal one or try to squeeze it in?

it says to rinse under the tap before putting it in,but by reading all the info on here,that seems a bad idea,am i best just to rinse it out in the tank before putting it into the filter?

I usually just take a jug of water out of the tank and rinse in that.

if it's a new sponge it's fine to wash under the tap, it's sponges that are covered in bacteria that shouldn't be washed under the tap.

well removed the carbon sponge as its been in the filter for 8 weeks,replaced it with blue one
