So we went to the LFS and my almost 8yr old was very upset. She said the betta was sad and lonely. I walked away and knew if I lingered what was coming. Anyways apparently I am weak! As it came home with us. I was always one of those inexperienced betta fish bowl owners. So for the time being it is in the cube that was the home to our first betta (before moving to a 5g). We bought a 5.5g tank but have to wait for it to cycle. I threw in one of my old filters in hopes it would help. Worth a shot as far as I was concerned. It's sitting on the bottom of the tank right now :(

Anyways I believe this little thing has fin rot. I've never delt with it so I'm not sure.

Also can you tell gender?

Once the tank is established (5.5g) can I add anything to it. I have these two small tanks that will be housing 1 betta each. Can I add a shrimp or snail?

Here's our new addition ...

It don't look like fin rot to me but daily water changes will heal and perk him up
And yes he's male
You could put shrimp in but depending on him he might eat them
Snails would be ok but not too many
When you say old filter do you mean a mature filter?

insted of cycling you could of used water from your old tank and a slice of media from there too thats what i dot and ive never had a problem :)

yup that's what I ment
Thanks!

Withought going to google. How can you tell the difference between male/female?

yeh males have normaly longer fins and they build bubble nests females dont they are more agressive then females imo as u can keep females together but not males and males have brighter colours :)

Nice Betta you got there, use some Melafix for a couple of weeks heals any wounds and settles them a bit, also makes you room smell nice =D

Hi lovely Vt you have there. I also do not see any signs of fin rot, he actually looks in very good condition for a pet s hop bought fish. Change 25% of his water with fresh temperature matched dechlorinated water every day and it will perk him up no end. The cheapest dechlorinator I have found is sold in tesco called tap safe. It is much more expensive everywhere else I have looked. Good luck with your new boy. Keep us updated. We love photos here xx
