I've poked around here a bit lately and wanted to let anyone who cares know how my foray into Betta ownership has gone, so here goes:

My Betta has moved into his ten gallon home after a 3 week cycling period. There were numerous guppy fry in there, but I couldn't stand seeing him in the little bowl anymore and had to move him in, thus turning 17 guppies into sacrificial lambs, unfortunately. As they were future turtle food anyway, I was only slightly upset. My as yet unnamed Betta shares his tank with a generic cory and an African Dwarf Frog, and 2 remaining guppies who will soon be moved out (incidentally, he ate the guppies over a period of several days, so I adjusted his feeding accordingly). He has sand as his tank substrate, with 4 live plants, including an Amazon Sword, Banana Plant, Java Fern, and Cobumba (sp). The temperature is a steady 80 degrees, and the filter current is obstructed to the point that he doesn't seem to mind it. I treated his tank with a tablespoon of aquarium salt added in small increments over a period of days, and treat the tank with Aquarisol once a week. He is very active, and has taken well to Betta Bites brand food (3-4 pellets twice daily), but he still gets bloodworms as a treat once or twice a week. I get constant interaction with him because he is right next to my computer, and I have to say that I am in love with the little guy.

All that said, I would appreciate critique/criticism, so long as I'm not crucified. I am, after all, a new owner, and I want him to have the best life he can.

BTW, he is a Veiltail. He is velvet with splashas of aqua blue on his face and fins, which I think makes for an amazing combination of colors. I will post pictures when I can.

How dare you keep a betta in a 10 gallon tank! lol j/k. :p

Wow, i bet he's one happy dude. Mine are in 5 gal tanks.... I cant even imagine them having double that. I'm sure he was happy to have some live food upon being introduced to his new environment . Seems like you've got it all figured out extremely well. Glad he has a good home and owner.

pics would be great.

wow he sounds pretty would love to see pics some time

Fantastic job! :good: You're doing just fine, just be sure to do your regular maintainance and look for help at the first sign of trouble.

sounds happy...my betta is in a 11 gal tank too, and he is soo happy, all that space, they just love it!

The only things I'd suggest would be to do a water change and don't add any more salt. From what I've read, cories don't do really well with salt. I'm not sure about that though so maybe check around the forums to see if that's right heh.
I'd also think about getting maybe 2 more cories. It would be better to get more, but only if your tank was larger.
I think maybe 2 more buddies would be good for it.

And yep, that's it... other than that, it sounds like a great tank and one lucky little betta :good:

Yeah the only reason I added salt was from what I read on another Betta site, which suggested the salt and Aquarisol. He transitioned fine with it, but I'll be wary of any complications. And yeah, definitely only 1 tbsp per 10 gallons, and I actually didn't even do that much. It was more like a few granules of the salt for a few days. I will probably add 2 more corys as suggested, because I like them and they seem to get along very well with just about anything. He is such an active fish and I am happy to have him, I just hope he will be around for a long while. The pet shop I got him from has their Bettas in better conditions than most, so I think he had a less stressful life thusfar than he could have. Thanks for the replies, I'll get some pics when I can get a hold of a digital camera.

I meant to say that cories don't do well with salt, not bettas lol ( i fixed it now heh). I must've thought cories but failed to type it out lol
