I know alot of you are experienced betta owners here, being that the only tank i own is a community tropical tank (and i'm having slight issues with that) i need some of you to cover the things that need to be done for a new betta tank.

11L(2.5G) Can you please cover both filtered and un-filtrered setups, Thanks.

CursedBlade.

I can cover the unfiltered part.

I keep one of my male betta's in an unfiltered 2 gallon tank. I do water changes every week and he has a live plant. I do have an airstone in there with him so the oxygen in the water doesn't get too low. Since bettas breathe air it is my belief that they do fine in an unfiltered tank as long as you do regular water changes.

That being said, unfiltered doesn't mean unheated. You wanna keep the water above 72 F at least. At best aim for over 75 F. My two gallon is between 75-77 F at winter and in the summer it goes to 80 F. Just keep up with the water changes and you should be fine. To be extra safe, buy an test kit and when you get an ammonia reading do a partial water change and test again. Your ammonia level should be at 0.

Hope i helped!

George lived happily alone in an unfiltered, unheated 6 gallon tank for several years (I changed his water weekly). The temperature stayed around 72 degrees. Aladdin is very happy in a 10 gallon, heated, filtered tank with some corys. Each fish is different, but for me, both types of set-ups have worked well.

i'v kept a few fish in 2.5 gal. tanks un filtered unheated tanks. and never had issues. like its been said a coule times already. regualr water changes are key, as with any tank.

Must have been a very very happy betta, seeing as their average life span is 2-3yrs :huh:

As for the filtered part I'll add my tuppence worth. If you want to do it (relatively) cheap, but give him a good home here's what you need (but don't take my word on it lol, I like to spoil my fish and give them loadsa space. Would you say 60-80L is enough for a male :D ):

50 watt heater or 25W depending on size of tank = £13 maximum
Air Driven filter (Algarde biofoam 45) + air pump = £10 max

Gravel (again depending on size of tank) = £2-£5
Plants (real if possible as plastics tend to tear betta fins :angry: ) £2-£5

+ lil fishy friend (betta) = £3 - £20? I'm not too sure what a halfmoon would cost, but they tend to get more expensive as the finnage get more fancy.

Oh and tank. 20 - 30L should be about right. Pick one up 2nd hand, give a good scrub. Cheap as chips!

So max = £49- £55 (not cheap cheap)
Min = £35 -£40 approx

It's still a small bit of cash to part with, but would be a good start. I'm sure you could do it cheaper, if not go el natural with no heater or filter. Just make sure he's nice and warm.
