Hi, just got into the fish keeping hobby 2 weeks ago, currently doing a fishless cycle on my new 65L tank, was a bit upset when i found out that the main fish i wanted to keep (a betta) wont be compatible with any of the other fish i inteded on keeping...

.....simple solution get another tank!

So i figure when my first tank is finished cycling, i can get a smaller tank to keep a male betta in. Here is what i think i may get, please tell me how it sounds to you (going to try and buy as much as i can second hand, since second hand gear seems so inexpensive!)

-20 Litre (5 Gallon tank) as the betta FAQ reccomends
-25 watt heater
~1 inch gravel
-Some largish pebbles
-Couple of plants

My final question is, would it be possible to split my external filter between 2 tanks, or would i be better just get a separate little filter for this tank?

thanks for the help, Paul

I would have a seperate filter for the betta tank, better to cut out cross contamanation if an illness breaks out. and I would go with the biggest tank for the betta that you cna get cheap, if you are offered a 10 or a 5 take the 10, you could always divide it later for more bettas.

so is everything i mentioned ok? what kind of lighting is best for bringin the colour out in bettas?
