New Betta, He's Ill Already

I did look like columnaris (which is bacterial) or the fungal thing beginning with S (can't remember the name) which looks very similar to columnaris. Both are nasty and can kill very, very quickly.

I recently lost 8 females to it and each one was dead within 12/24 hours of showing symptoms.

Sorry for your loss =(

If it is columnaris, I think I am right in saying that the bacteria is always present and that it's stress to the fish which sets off the infection.

Having done some research, I do think it might have been columnaris. Does anyone know whether the bacteria from this can survive in the tank on things like substrate or filter media? I'm also worried that my corys might have caught it. Do I need to treat the tank or can I just put another betta in there?
