hi all,

my new betta that I recently got, died after only 6 weeks. I had him in the same conditions that I had my last two bettas.....in a small bowl with bottled drinking water. The first betta lived 4 years and was only sick once at the end. My 2nd betta lived 2 yrs. 4 months but I treated him regularly for ick/fungus type stuff. This new betta seemed to get some type of film on him, but I did not treat him soon enough.

I'm assuming like all living things that some bettas are just more hardy and disease resistant than others.

I did get a new betta tonite. I purchased a new 1 gallon bowl so it will be clean. This time I want to try something different. I will still buy drinking water from the store but I bought some "Bowl Buddies" by Jungle to add to it. What do you think of this combination?

sorry for the loss of your betta

for your new betta you really should have a heater unless you can be sure the temperature never dips, a filter isnt nescessary as long as you do regular changes of your water,
you dont need to be buying store bought water, but i know some people do. tap water should be fine as long as you use a dechlorinator

i hope your new betta will be happy in his new home

xXx

You're best not using bottled water as they contan nothing beneficial and a lot of them contain Nitrates. As Bubbleburst said, tap water will be fine as long as you use a dechlorinator with it.
A heater is a must as the temperature can fluctuate so much and this will cause your Betta to become stressed. If you can, then get a bigger bowl as 1G is far too small and he'd be happier in a 5G+.

Some bottled water actually has chlorine in it in small amounts. I think it is better to use tap water with water conditioner. A good idea is to let the water sit overnight to release all the gases in the water, and bring it up to room temperature. Use cold water from the tap because most water heaters have a certain amount of bacteria in it.

thank you all for your help :)

the Betta Buddies I am using are a conditioning/declorinator tablet

I want to use bottled water and hopefully the tablets will give me assurance that the water will be fine

Please don't use the bottled water, it contains nothing beneficial at all and could do more harm than good. Many people use tap water with a dechlorinator and have no problems whatsoever.
If you don't want to use tap water then how about using RO water? All you need to do is add some minerals to it and it will be a lot better for your fish.
