So I gutted my 40g today and added sand, and nice wood. Here is the before:

And the after (sorry its cloudy)

My camera died so I will add some better pics when the cloudiness clears.

That's one big hexagonal tank, I wasn't even aware you could get them that large. I prefer the new scape Thought about planting that wood?

Looks good i redone mine the other day its raised on either side to make sediment flow to the dead spot i made in the middle behind some wood so you cant see the debris it works pritty well

looks good. you know u could scrape the name of your fish lost on the wood in a secret way. That will be so cool and will make all this effort more meaningful.

I have a 65g hex downstairs in my basement that is not in use

And I am going to plant the wood. I am going to cover it with either java moxx or christmas moss. I am also going to eventually replace the plastic plants with real ones. I just don't have the money right now. The cories are happy. They have a lot more room on the floor to play.

Now that the cloudiness has cleared some

I am pretty happy with the way it worked out. Now I just need to get some REAL plants What kind of low tech plants can I use that do not require all sorts of crazy maintenance?

It looks great! I think I may have liked it a tad better before but it still looks great. Maybe some anacharis?i think it looks like that fake plant in there a bit but real. And maybe anubias,java moss,java fern,swords. Depends what you want.

So how can I get that unused 65 gallon hex to my house without you knowing? . I'm feeling :sneaky:

It would be difficult, as it is in the basement and my roommate stays down there And I liked the look before, but the wood was fake. I needed a good piece of real wood, mainly for my BN plec. Plus, this new piece opens the floor up ALOT for my cories.

What kind of low tech plants can I use that do not require all sorts of crazy maintenance?

If you want plants that look similar to your plastic plants I've had a decent amount of success with elodea, cabomba, bacopa and ludwigia. Amazon swords grow really well for me too but the BN eats them, so java fern might be a bit more plec-proof. This is all in a tank where the only thing I do for the plants is have the lights on

Thank you for the information. I will probably be ordering my plants online. The ones at my LFSs don't look all that great. I am really looking forward to planting my tank. This is my very first fullout planted tank. It's definitely not where I want it yet. Still a lot to be done.

Thank you The tree was a pain to get around when I was doing this lol. Unfortunately the only place to put it was next to the tank!

The tree itself was compliments of my 4 and 5 year old. They did a really good job this year! There were actually ornaments on BOTH sides of the tree!!
