My brother has just purchased his first cold water aquarium and I will be teahing him how to keep it healthy etc, however I have a tropical tank so have some questions myself.

Is there a temperature that goldfish prefer? Im sure the cold water that comes out of my taps is way to cold for any fish.

Can he keep a pleco in there?

It is 21 litre (5.5 us gallons I believe) so am I correct in thinking it can home about 4 fish?

How many fish can he put into the tank at one time? Are there any goldfish that are particularly hardy compared to others?

I think these are all my questions at the moment, thanks in advance

Nicola

5.5 gal is WAY WAY too small for even a single gold-fish, and most varieties of plecs.

If I were you...I would just stick a betta in a tank that size. Though if you have your mind set on making it a cold-water tank, you could keep about 3-5 White cloud minnows without much problem, so long as you keep up on your water quality and changes.

Is wallis the tall plants a tthe back of your tank? Sorry, I'm just looking for plants to put in my tank.

Goldies prefer 68 degrees. However, that is way to small for a goldie. It is recommended that each goldie needs 10 gallons per fish. However, I personally disagree with even that as goldies get pretty big and I couldn’t imagine mine in a 10 gallon. So I would definitely pass on a goldie in there.

Thanks for all the advice, I persuaded him to go for a couple of white cloud minnows which are doing fine as far as I know (ive been away for a few days) Is there any type of algae eater that could go into a cold water set up?

Was going to suggest a betta but his tank is a plastic one and cannot have a heater attached

I believe its supposed to be 20 gallons for the first goldfish, and 10 gallons for each additional goldfish. Common goldfish really need the swimming room though so bigger the better :)
