Hi all

I am new to fish keeping and am looking for some help. I read up for a couple of weeks about how to get stuck in and get the most out of the hobby. I wanted to do that before I actually got a tank to make sure I would be fully committed (I am by the way!). Since then I have bought a BiUbe (35 Litres / 9 gallons) which has been cycled and has some tropical fish in it now and they seem to be doing really well. I got a small tank because (again) I wanted to make sure that I was serious about the hobby and now I've got this one up and running I am desperate to get a 'proper' tank going.

So what I need help with is really how to best set up a larger tank and if there is anything in particular I should be looking for? I am looking at getting around 200-260 Litres - there are plenty in my LFS and are priced at around £300 - £500. I saw this:

http://www.seapets.co.uk/products/roma-240...-light-oak.html

which seemed like a really good deal as I need a cabinet as well.

So does anyone have any recommendations for a tank that is good for a newbie such as myself?

Also any tips for cycling a tank? I don't have anyone nearby who can donate water etc.

I haven't given a thought to what fish I actually want yet - all I know is that I LOVE neon tetras :)

I hope some people can offer me advice as I am just looking for a bit of help and I don't know any fish keepers myself!

Thanks in advance

D

hi

do you live in the uk? If so, at Pets at home, they are doing a deal on fluval tanks atm, they have a lovely 260 ltr bow front tank, with cabnet and external filtration, heater and t5 lighting for £418

as for knowing anyone to donate water, it's not water that gets "mature" it is the filter media.

Hope this helps

Oh really? See I'm learning already! I thought it was the water that you could bring into a new tank which contained the bacteria! So by media do you mean plants/bog wood?

That deal sounds good and there is a Pets at Home near me which I'll go and visit this weekend to look for that deal! I think £418 would be top of the budget for just the tank considering I will need plants and such in it as well :)

How did you cycle the first 2 tanks?
Media is the sponge/ceramics in the filter :)

I cycled with fish (2 guppies) as was advised by my LFS - even though those fish are OK I don't want to cycle my next tank with fish as reading more about it I think I'd feel better (for the fish) if I did it fishless!

OK I definitely won't be able to get any media as my existing tank is a BiUbe and so the filter is different to the tank I want to get! In which case I guess I just need to set the new tank up and 'feed' it?

Have a read here, on how to do a proper fishless cycle.

You will be looking at 4-6 weeks for it to be completed.
