Hi my name is Tyler, from Canada,

Im slightly new to fish my dad has had a couple big fish here and there, (oscars, sharks). I currently have taking over his empty tanks and equiptment.

I have a ten gallon tank that is currently going through the "start new cycle"
I was told that all that was needed was stuff to take the clhorine out of the water and a bacteria growth suppilment is this true?
They also told me they would give me two gold fish to but in the tank to kick the bacteria into gear, and after two weeks to take them back with a water sample to get tested, and exchange them for real fish. Does this sound correct to you? (p.s i dumped the gold fishes water into the tank to because that probably has bacteria?)

Now the ten gallon is just for the start. I have a 55gal that i would later like to move my fish into.

My main question is what type of fish... Here is what im looking for any help will be appreciated (names, and a link so i can research)
- Something decently big (i want more then one fish maybe two)
- I dont want a community fish tank
- Something that eats other things
- Something somewhat colourfull

The fish i was looking at were...
- Needle nose gar (these were said that they liked to have others and i dont think two could fit in a 55gal)
- Oscars (dont seem to appealing to me)
- Catfish ( like a piscus or something)
- I also wanted something weird like a eel or a crab/lobster (if that will work)

Sorry for my huge list of demands haha, thanks for the help!

Cheers!

ammonia is normally used to feed the bacteria in fishless cycling http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=113861

that sounds right but then you dont need the ammonia to feed the bacteria if you have fish. Fish-in Cycling http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=224306
