I’ve re-written my algae article. You should find it more comprehensive and relevant, especially with the recently increased use of CO2 and EI – although it is still relevant to non-CO2 and non-EI users.

I have aimed it at all levels of hobbyist so will hopefully be fairly easy to follow, even for the novice. It will help if you have read the other pinned topics on lighting, CO2 and EI.

Any feedback or questions can be posted here.

I recommend printing it out – it is over 3000 words!

Thanks mate. It is rather long but I have tried to cover as many aspects as possible. I thought it was worth spending a bit of time though, algae is our biggest bug bear after all. Hopefully it will help others lead an algae free existence.

I think its a very good comprehensive article, i just hope less experienced planted tank people wont get a bit lost especially reading through the first half, it made total sense to me i just hope it isnt a bit to complex for others.

But i understand how difficult it is to write articles like this, its a complex subject and its impossible to pack it into a few paragraphs, but very well written id say a lot of work went into it.

Dont get me wrong with the above, what you might not understand today you will understand in time with more experience, thats probably a better way of looking at it, and i suppose there is no point in produceing something that only covers the very basics.

But well done, a lot of work went into it i know that, and hopefully it will give lots of people good guidance in the months ahead.

Good point zig. I got a non-fishy friend to read it through and she understood most of it - well she said she did, probably just being polite!

It is hard to write for a wide range of hobby experience. I tried to remember my level of understanding when I started out in the planted hobby (only two years ago, seems a lot longer). I think I would have understood the main principles. I think it is important to have read the other articles too then one hopefully sees the overall picture. A lot of reading I know but at least it's all in one place now.

Very well written article gf225, at least the first 1/3 is anyway, printing off now to read in my own time. i think i may be pushing the boundaries reading that lot at work, ha ha.

thanks for putting the time in to spread your knowledge i'm sure i speak for most people in that we'll grab hold of anything related to algae prevention with both hands. good stuff thanks

Personally i dont think there is any point in having just very basic information here in the pinned articles it would be rather pointless and wouldnt help people get beyond the level of "beginner" IMO.

Agreed. Hopefully our articles can contribute a little to the wonderful world of planted aquaria and its understanding. I wish I had them to read when I started out - I would have saved £100s!
