Have just done a 25% water change and at the same time put a new net of activated carbon in my filter. I rinsed out the new net of carbon under running water and then in the old tank water. When I started up the filter a cloud of black came into the tank from the new carbon. Can this harm the fish and will the tank eventually clear or should I remove the new carbon and change some of the cloudy water?

I think it will be fine; it will probably get pulled through the filter. I rinse my carbon until the water runs clear, and then I rinse it once more.

I could be wrong about it harming, however, but I really don't think so.

I might take extra precaution if it's a cichlid tank, only as there's a possible link betw. HITH and carbon dust.
Beyond that, as above, I wouldn't worry much...maybe another rinse, see if it runs clear.

Thanks very much for advice. I did change a bit more of the tank water and rinsed out carbon again until the water was completely clear. Everything is still alive and kicking this morning :D although water is still a little cloudy.

I never rinse my carbon filter before putting it in.
Theres only a tiny bit of dut on mine, but nothing comes through the filter into the tank. Must be something good about Juwel filters after all!!!
