Hi all,
A friend is kindly donating an 80L tank to me and I was wondering if you'd pretty please tell me if the fish I want to put in it would:
a) live happily together
b) have enough space etc. (don't want to overstock and kill them all!)

I was thinking about:
10 x neon tetras
3 x three-lined or panda corys
2 x bolivian rams
1 x blue siamese fighter

I'd also really like a pearl gourami but I'm not sure if I would be overstocking it with the list above as it is?
I've never kept tropical fish before (only had cold water gold fish and black moores) so I've been reading everything I can find about it furiously. I'm fairly sure I understand the nitrate cycling process and intend to do a fishless cycle before I buy any fishies. I'm not actively looking to breed any etc. as I think that'd be out of my depth.

Any advice regarding planting the tank etc. or anything you think would be good for a complete noob like me to know would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks :)

:hi:

Firstly, well doen on your research, its goo to see another newbie to trops taking actvie steps to research their proposed "inmates"!

Betta and Tetra are a no-no im 99% of cases. Fin nipping from weither party will most likely turn into a full scale fight. They're considered "conspecific", or in basic terms, they look similar, so will often scrap.

Panda's would be a good choice, however a group of 6 is really the minumum to keep them happy, and a sand substrate rather than gravel. Look at the smaller Cory species, as its a relatively small tank (2ft x 1ft x 1ft im guessing?)

I dont have any experience with rams, but not 100% sure they would be ok, but someone will put me right soon!

Hope this helps, keep up the good work :)

EDIT: Spelling..

I definitely want the tetras so I'll knock any future plans for gouramis and siamese fighters out of my head :)
Thanks for the advice!

Agree with what Mowbz says about the cories.

I had issues with Cardinal Tetras and a male betta, although they got along fine at first, slowly the tetras starting nipping the betta.

Betta and Gourami are also conspecific, so they will probably not get along.

Your stocking plan looks good to me. I would hold off on the Pearl Gourami with a Betta in there. Otherwise, Betta should be fine with what you propose. Bettas usually only cause problems with fish like male guppies, with long flowing tails that resemble the Betta's. Another option would be to skip the Betta and the Pearl Gourami and add a male Dwarf Gourami of any color variety. That would be the least likely to cause any problems, and would be a nice showy fish. What are the dimensions of the tank?

Just spoke to the tank donator to enquire about dimensions... she got a bit confused as the model is a Juwel something 80 she assumed it was 80L, looks like it's 180L! Wahey!

So in that case I have a lot more room to play with and no idea how to stock it up nicely.

I've already decided to up the neon tetra number to 20 so I can see them shoaling (it fascinates me for some reason). And now I know to get 6-8 corys to make sure they're nice and happy.

I like pretty colourful fish (like rams, I've already given up on bettas) but I also have a soft spot for cory catfish. What would you guys suggest?

i have no issues with Neons with Bettas, i wouldn't have a Betta & Rams though, so maybe miss the Rams and get extra Cories instead?

if your liking bettas you could always have a group of females :) groups of 5+ work well, i have 20 :good:
