Hi

I am getting a new tank (just ordered it!!) and have a few ideas for some fish I would like to have, but need some advice on who can go with who etc. Asked in lfs and was told i could have some larger shoaling fish with some of the cichlids but weren't really clear about which ones.

So here's the guys I like:

oscar
jack dempsey
green terror
convicts
green severum
festivum
tiger barbs
congo tetra
plecs

I'm guessing my tank will be too small for an oscar and other fish together?

Any suggestions of combinations would be great, please suggest any other fish I haven't listed as well :good:

thanks!

oh I forgot to say we'd like to move a pair of kribs in there too, we got them as adults about two months ago and they came from a tank that had a pair of GTs in and some other larger cichlids, where they all got on fine.

it's a corner tank

height 65cm/25.6"
length of each side 87cm/34.3"
length of front 123cm/48.4"

diagram here

It's a juwel tank but we could remove filter and replace with an external filter especially if we had an oscar - i've heard they're messy!

I would take the Oscar and Tiger Barbs off the list. The Congos are great shoaling fish and another option would be Rainbow fish. The Severum is the most peaceful on the list.

thanks! So could have all those other fish on the list in the tank, or to pick some of them?

I'd would like some advice on how many of each I could have, I'm new to NW cichlids!

Could blue acaras go with any of these?

If you wanted the kribs again, I would stick to the more peaceful on that list (and ones that won't eat them eg. oscar). The severum and festivum would work nicely I think.

So what I would do is:
The pair of kribs
1 severum
Pair of festivums

that seems like a good option! Would I be able to put some congo tetra in there or not really? I quite like shoaling fish is all, no problem not having them tho. Would it matter if the severum was male or female?

What about a jd a gt and a convict or would that not be a good combination? (without the kribs)

The congos should be ok in the first set up I would have thought. With regards to the sev's sex I don't think it would matter tremendously, though in general females are regarded to be abit less aggressive I don't think it would make much difference. Theres still a chance the severum won't like the pair of kribs, so if possible introduce them all when they are young.

About the GT, JD and con, its the dimensions of the tank that would cause a problem here and I think that it may be too many large fish, if you chose the GT or JD then I think it has a better chance to work.

You will be safer with the semi-aggressive...

1 Severum (males are prettier)
pair Kribs
1 Festivum or Blue Acara
shoal of Congos

If ya really like the Jack Demsey, I have seen them kept with Firemouths which are beautiful. I have no experience with those but may be somthing to look in to.

Cheers guys, that's really helpful!

I think we've decided on the last suggestion, with a blue acara rather than a festivum.

Saying that it's a week before the tank arrives then it's got to cycle so who knows what might happen!

thanks again to you both! :good: :good:
