Hello everyone, i am indeed new to the forum and really would appreciate some experience and knowledge shared with me on what fish go well together and what ones dont. thanks to anyone who does reply to this :)

There are so many different kinds of fish, it's hard to give advice straight off. What kind of fish do you like? Is your water hard or soft?

the water is quite hard and i had a look at some natural ecosystem tanks already set up and im thinking south american species still unsure though :/

I'd avoid most of the South American species if your water is on the harder side, as most of them prefer it softer, but some tetras and dwarf cichlids are quite adaptable.

Some of the smaller rainbowfish, barbs or even Tanganyikan shell dwellers would be worth looking into.

ah ok then, and what about amount of fish ? the tank says roughly 24 - 30 fish but i think it would be too full ? and the shell dwellers are they easy for first time fish keepers? and what plants would they naturally have ?

Central American livebearers is another possibility.

Anyway, 24-30 sounds totally unrealistic even for the titchiest fish. In a tank this size you would be looking at maybe a dozen small fish (tetra size) or rather fewer if slightly larger. But you would also need to think about the needs of the individual fish: some are territorial so you might only be able to have one of that particular species, others need to be in shoals.

If you went with the shelldwellers, you would need a sandy substrate and plenty of shells, and to start out with a small group (maybe 4-5) and let them breed.

If you wanted South American, there are tetras and corydoras catfish which do not mind hard water: you could for instance do a small school of corydoras (check individual species for preferred temperature) and a school of black neons (less fussy than neons and cardinals).

Have you checked out the pinned topic on cycling?

thank you for the info should give me good insight as the guide did seem a bit extreme to me aswell, i know about cycling the tanks and i have someone with some filter media for me to have. To breed the shell dwellers do you need any extra specialist equipment so i can prepare if this is my chosen species? :) any other info that you may think is vital to share with me please do all the help i can get from you guys the better :) cheers
