The reason mine caught it was they were new additions to the tank (maybe the ich was in the tank water I dumped in my tank with them?) and right after putting them into the tank, say a few days later, I threw some crushed coral in the Eheim to raise the ph for the african cichlids. I only put a little in there and was going to gradually increase the amount in order not to give any of them PH shock. It shot up very fast anyway and that's when a clown loach got eat up with ich like in the next few days. Then they all got it, next the tiger barbs, next the cichlids. I treated them all with salt and raised heat and it worked like a charm.
Take your time acclimating them and don't subject them to sudden water parameter changes, and you will be fine. They're very hardy fish otherwise.
