I'm using a 5 gallon bow front to house my betta. He is alone currently, with a Top Fin 10 power filter. I'm going to add in 3 ghost shrimp and an african dwarf frog. I'm also going to plant it heavily with dwarf hairgrass, anubius, java fern, and more. I'll post pictures tomorrow or the next day, and when its done.

The easiest way to stop things being sucked into the filter is to use a piece of ladies fine mesh tights (or pantyhose) secure it over the inlet with some cotton or a rubber band.

I returned that filter and got a Top Fin 10 Power Filter. The thing is, its kind of flowing too hard into the tank and shaking around the water surface too much. I just bought a new Male Crowntail Betta and I know he won't like that... what can I do besides raising the water level a bit? The tank is about 2½ to 3 inches from the top full. How can I reduce the filter's water output so its not as hard?

You can't really fit anything else in the tank unless you want one more ADF.
I can definitely "fit" a betta, and ADF and three ghost shrimp. I took back the Marina i25 and now I have a Top Fin 10 Power Filter. There is definitely some room in the tank for tank mates. Ghost shrimp and ADFs are small, it won't be a problem.
