I just set up a new 125 gallon tropical fish tank with two overflow filtration. I had an aquarium company come out and do it to make sure all is done right and I got the right parts. The water has been in the tank for 4 days now. My question is how many fish can I add at once with out killing them?

The best thing you can do is do a fishless cycle. This means adding ammonia to the tank to replicate the wastes that will eventually be produced by the fish.

Then you can grow the beneficial filter bacteria without risking exposing the fish to high levels of ammonia.

There are good articles on the nitrogen cycle and fishless cycling in the beginner's resource centre (link is in my sig).

Thank you for the response. I had good luck starting a 10 gallon and only added 2 fish for the first week and then 2 more the following week with out any casualties did not know if anyone had success with a larger tank. thanks

Even if these starter fish don't die, it does harm them. Most people (who are informed of the options) choose not to do fish-in cycles anymore. It really is nice to have the time to change and re-change your aquascaping and research the fish you want and you don't have to do tons of water changes during the cycle (actually none until the end).

Well its too late for me now to take the fich back :-(. They are still all alive and doing well I am pleased to say. I just changed the filter drom my 10 Gallon tank, can I take it and put that in my 125 to help the cycle?

looks like your stuck doing a fish in cycle. means water changes every day

its amazing how lfs give out such bad advice.cycling your tank with fish in is mean, but thats due to bad advice. from the local fish shop. riogal_11 has stated a good point no water changes means you can play about with your tank.

Yes put the stuff from your ten gallons filter in the 125's. How many fish did you put in?

Thanks for responding. I have 10 fish in there now mix of Platty's and Guppy's. I know what fish I want and what my landscape to look like. I have known that for a long time. I just never had a large tank I started from scratch I always had handy downs. Here is my tank. How long do I leave that filter in there from my 10 gallon?
