my gf wants some new fish for her 10g. I recently bought her 2 small cichlids and a dwarf puffer, which i'll be putting in my 40g. I want to get her a fun and easy fish, guppies and mollies came to mind. these 2 species can live in harmony correct? And reading how guppies can breed with mollies, it seems pretty interesting and exciting to get some for her to watch and take care of. I was wondering how many of each can i get for a 10 gallon that has about 4 plants and a driftwood decor in the middle.

She also wants a betta, i was wondering if the betta would attack the guppies?

You might be able to get around ten, depending on how many of each.

I don't think they'll even attempt breeding if there are males and females of the same species.

You should be able to get tons of them if you decide on having lots of male guppies. They get to about 1", so you might be able to bend the rules a tad bit.

Good luck. :D

cool, cus after i bought the 2 cichlids and the dwarf puffer for her, she wanted more fish! so i asked how many did she want total? and she said 6. I'm not gonna buy more cichlids and cramp up that 10g, so i'll just get small peaceful fish for her. thanks, i'll head to the store now :)

I just saw taht you're a newbie!

:hi: to the forum. Introduce yourself in the newbie section.

Wait for more responses before getting the fish. It's best to have more than one opinion before getting fish or making changes to your tanks.

Ok. B/c you said you were leaving and I freaked out.

Just as long as you/she has/have the proper care and feeding down, then it should be good. If the tank is already cycled, then changing the fish should not be too bad because the amonia should have been detoxified in an old tank.

yea, i checked 2 days ago, and ammonia nad nitrites were at 0 and 0. 0 and 0 in the 40gallon too. My pond is at .5 ammonia and .25 nitrites... but thats a diff story :shifty:

Mollies need brackish water to thrive.
bettas will not tolerate brackish water and may fight with the male guppies.
If you get guppies of both sexes than you deffinataly don't want to start out with 10- they will do the stocking for you. Also, mollies get around 3-5 inches so you can't have many of them in a ten gallon, especially if you want other fish too.
So, a betta wouldn't really work in this tank.
I would suggest sticking to 2 trios of guppies. 1male for every 2 females so the females aren't overly harrassed by the males wanting to mate.
They will have lots of babies for you to enjoy later;)

p.s. how did you cycle these tanks?

before i bought her the 2 cichlids and puffer, i had 4 rosy reds in there for quite a while which she named "rosy family" , they were my cyclers. So, i guess mollies and bettas are out of the question then :(

No.

I didn't read that you wanted a betta. I looked but I couldn't find where you said that.

It is true that mollies like brackish water, but I'm not sure if it's really that necessary...

Hmm. Maybe I should have read up on mollies a bit more. I thought they stayed small. Fortunately I never planned to get them. Sorry for the bad advice. :/

Well, the guppies should work.

Males get to 1", females to 2.5". If that helps you at all.

You asked about having a betta in the same tank. I think you can, well at least that's my opinion. I have a 10 g tank with 3 male guppies, 1 preg f guppy, 3 male balloon dalmation mollies, 2 white balloon female mollies(both may be preg.) and A male betta. They get along great and they never fight they respect their spaces. At first I thought the betta would kill them when I put them together since the fish were giving to me as a gift and I origanaly had the betta for two years. I had to put them together in 5 g tank. But now moved them into a 10 g tank. But they get along great. I guess it just depends in the fish's attitude so try at your own risk.
