I was poking around in my LFS the other day and I saw these -tiny- fish. They are all about the size of a neon currently, but the owner said that they will get up to 3 inches long but no bigger. I thought this was odd since they looked a bit like baby comet (feeder) fish. When I stated this I was 'politely' informed (She actually got a bit snippy  ) that they are a breed called rosie goldfish and that they were good for feeding smaller turtles, snakes and predator fish. I've looked about for a couple of days but I cannot find a -thing- about these, is my LFS lieing or am I just missing info?

Yes, yes...I have a love for feeder fish.

Sounds more like rosey-red minnows which are not gold-fish, but are often used as feeders.

Is this them?

Rosey red minnows.

Well, 3 inches is a lie. I can think of no species of goldfish that stays that small. If there was it would be everywhere. People don't like having one goldfish per 20g or whatever :)

I think i would go with sirminion.

SirMinion - Yes! That looks exactly like them! *Cackles in glee* Now I shall go poke that lady with a pointy object and tell her to change the sign.

OohFeeshy - I know, when it said gold fish and then she told me three inches I was like...'Um...goldfish get -big- lady...'

It was irking me so bad because the little suckers are just so darn cute, but I didn't wanna get one without getting enough info on it. You think I could put one or two in my 10 gal? It's got three little comets and a three-inch pleco, I'm just terrified of overstocking. I don't want anyone to be uncomfortable.

lol

considering you have 3 comets in there, you're already over stocked....so nope!!

I'ved been searching for rosy red minnows for ages but just can't get them, one of the local shops (Swallows) is breeding them but want to make sure they have a good stock before selling.

I am? Oh dear....I though it was ok because they were all little ones  The biggest one is like...1 1/2 body... Ah well. *laughs* Thank for letting me know Paul! I appreciate it. I should be getting a 50 gal on June 11 so I'll just have to wait. Patience, Mina, patience...

They're cute, aren't they? ^-^ I fell in love with them when I wandered past the tank on my way to get another plant.

you may not be overstocked now but as comets get big like any goldifsh as already said then you will be overstocked once they start piling on the pounds!!

if you know your getting a 50g in june and you don't often see the minows around then get them now keep check on water parameters and do more water changes to suit unitl you upgrade.

I've lived at a house with a big deep pond stocked with them. I once stuck a minnow trap with a peice of bread in it at the edge of the pond, the next day I pulled it out and it was heavier than hell because they were packed tighter than sardines in there. And when we threw bread in the pond, you'd just see a huge cloud of gold come flying up from the deep and devour the bread like Jaws.

Rosie minnows are exactly what they are, 10 for a dollar here on Long Island.

Paul, want me to ship you 100? I am sure you can get some good breeding stock out of a sample like that.

thanks for the offer but i think the cost of shipping to the UK would cost several times more than what the fish are worth!!....oh well will just have to wait for them to be around again!

Does any one know where these fish are native to and if they would be ok in a community set up?
