Hi there, I think Im in trouble... Today I have had a Neon die... I though, one was a one of. I know how fickle they can be... But now, I have one floating around the bottom in shock, and another stuck to my filter... I know fish, and know both will be dead very shortly...

MY question is, do any of you have an idea what is wrong? The tank is new, and still cycling, (about 2 months old)

Can anybody help me?

cycling should be done in 2 months as long as u didn't stock all at once.

unfortunately noen are not as strong fish now adays, neon disease ( i think), this can also cause arching of the back.

don't stock any more neon for at least 6 months :grr:

I used the old filter media from my old tank, so I was hoping it would be quicker...

One Neon every now and then is acceptable and expected... But three in one day... Something must be wrong...

I'll see if I can get some water parameters...

Here are my parameters :

NO3 - 0
NO2 - 0
GH - >16d
KH - >6d
Ph - 7.2

Contrary to popular belief, neon tetras are NOT beginner fish and can be pretty fickle. IMO, they should only be put in a mature cycled tank. They can also have neon tetra disease which is basically not well understood and usually fatal. SH

These ones arent new and Im not a beginner... Possibly it was a bit early in the cycle to introduce them to the main tank, but I have never had trouble with my methods...

What your ammonia reading.
Has the red strip faded or look bleached out, yes neons do better in mature tanks of six months.
How long did you climatise them for, what was the ph of the other tank to your cycling tank, as ph can be all over the place in a cycling tank.

I had the misfortune of putting 8 Neons into a tank which was running just 2 weeks .... 7 were dead in 5 days, Neon Tetra disease & White Spot they got!! though I think they had it already, unless the Ich or whatever was hiding in a plant waiting for a host which is unlikely.

I still have one of the tetras left, he's been there over a year now. I have added other fish since, but recently removed 13 platties and added 6 Neons ... 1 died within a day or 2 but the rest are fine.

I think that Neons are too fragile ... I'm almost afraid to buy anymore.

You'll be lucky to have any Neons left once the cycle is over ...

I gave up on neons as well did well with the first batch, then 7 months later bought some more, ntd wiped the whole tank out, to me there not worth the risk unless you just want to keep a neon tetra tank, or put them in issolaltion a long time.

I've never really had a problem with them really. Of course they die on occasion, as do all fish. These three worried me. Things seem to have calmed down now.

I have some rather boystrouis Zebra Danios in the tank with them, do you think they could be the cause of this?

When I was completely new to fishkeeping, following advice from LFS, I put 5 neons in my tank to cycle it (along with a guppy and a molly). LFS said that it'd be a good way to check if the water quality was OK, as neons can be sensitive.

They are still going strong after three months, although the guppy did die last month (for no obvious reasons).

So I suppose some neons can be quite hardy?

Martin

Cycled my tank with 5 Neons and all still ok and double their size.
