Neon Tetra

Does anyone know if the neon tetra can handle temps in the 60's? I know I found one website that say's they can be kept in 68-79 but what about if the water got a little below 68 like around 65?

Hi,
I probably wouldn't do this as Neon Tetras are tropical and will definately enjoy water more in the higher 70's and lower 80's but it could possibly be done, I'm not definate though. It would be very helpful if someone had already attempted this and could state and explain how they went with it. Personally I would not do it but it could be possible, you never know.

Thanks for your advice the more I think about it I agree with you. I am trying to think of some other fish I could keep in a cool water tank that wouldn't need a heater and my daughter really likes the neon tetra but I told her they would rather have warmer water.

There are some fish (other than goldfish) that will be happy in a coldwater tank, with the most attractive for me being White Cloud Mountain Minnows or Zebra Danios (if your aquarium has the room). I'm sure if you went down to a lfs you could take a look to see what's up for grabs, you never know, something just might catch your eye. Just be sure to research any fish thoroughly to determine whether it is actually going to be happy in colder water or not. Sometimes you can be told things that are completely untrue.
