hi, came home from work to discover one of my ten neon tetra's looks a bit under the weather, im new to the fish keeping and would like suggestions on what to do, the fish's tail has lost its reddness, the gill's are red and sore looking, it looks like its struggling to swim and is gasping... the other tetra's and fish seem fine..

the tank has been fully cycled and water parameters are fine.

any help?

doesnt look like its gonna get through the night

cheers

sore looking red gills sounds like ammonia poisioning.

What are your water parameters? Could we see the actual numbers?

well just taken more readings, and they are AMMONIA 0ppm, NITRITES 0ppm, NITRATES 5-10ppm, PH 7.4

hope this helps, if you want a photo of fish and readings, i could try post them.

Thank you for supplying those readings so promptly! Your ammonia and nitrites look good. If your ammonia has been at 0, then I guess we can assume it's not ammonia poisoning. Have you had an ammonia spike recently that could have caused damage to the neon? The only other thing I can think of is gill flukes. Try googling that and see if it looks like what you are dealing with. How long have you had the neons? How long has the tank been set up for? How did you cycle the filter?

Heres the poor fella

He does have some very red gills. It really does look like some form of poisoning, be it ammonia or something else. Is there any way your tank may have been contaminated with any chemicals at all?

no nothing that comes to mind, plus he's the only one with any ailments out of the 16 fish in the tank, everyone else are swimming about minding their business... feel sorry for him and hope there is something to do for him...

To answer Colleen, i done a fishless cycle with advice from this site, 6 long weeks... no spikes to report of, the tanks been up and running 6 weeks (12 including cycletime)

stocked with 6 guppies, 10 tetra's... couple more to come eventually.

feeding them on flake, pellets, frozen daphnia, added some of them 'live' foods couple of times, keeping a varied diet, feed once, max twice a day, just enough, no waste evident on the floor.....

i dont have a quarentine tank, should i put him in a bucket to save the other fish?

Feel sorry for the little fella

well i've got him in a tub on his own, i think he's had it......

can't see him getting better
