Hey,
I have this one neon tetra that is a little bit pale and half of his tail fin has gotten smaller. is it finrot?
Tank- 90L
20 neons
1 flame dwarf gourami

stats- ammonia- 0 nitrite- 0 nitrate- 20-30 ( in between)
Tank has been up and running for about 9 months now.
Water change weekly- 40-50%

New things- 5 neon tetras yesterday, and plants nearly 2 weeks ago.
Only additive other then prime is api plant food.

please help :/

hope you get some answers i posted a similar question yesterday but no one seems to be able to help.

thank you :) i hope your fish are alright :/ it seems like there is more then one of my neons that have this problem. the end of the fins are a lot whiter then the rest of the fin and parts are shorter..... should i try a treatment for the whole tank??

i wouldnt like to advise as ive not really had any success in clearing my finrot problem ive tested my waters and they seem to be fine the only advice i can find is that it helps to do maybe a few more extra water changes but i did this and im still having problems 4 months later. i tried doing a 5 day course of myxazin after a water change a month ago as a last resort as its advised not to use meds unless absolutley nescessary but still i have finrot in my tank. sorry i cant give you any sound advice as im still hoping to get some myself. So dont waste ya money on meds until you get the right advice. sorry i cant help anymore.

another reason you should hold off on the meds is that the myxazin i used was apparentley unsafe for my betta which i found out after treatment luckily she seems fine for now.

Thank you :) i will do some more water changes. Could it be the new tetras nipping? or my gourmi? or is it most likely finrot?

My fish that had finrot all devolped rapidly with chunks missing from fins or a white patch in the fin that then fell off in the case of my hatchett half of his pectoral fin fell off in one go as i watched. I ended up killing a few of the fish to put them out there misery and i believe the infection is contagious to the other fish. I think its important to be 100% sure that you have finrot and not just a bit of fin nipping as you dont want to medicate unnecesarily.

from what i can make out so far finrot is mainly caused through poor water quality but my waters appear to be ok. Other factors can be stress or the nipping of fins leaves the fish with an open wound which can then lead not only to finrot but also other bacterial infections.

Like i say tho' im no expert and so far im no closer to solving my probs though but if you keep checking my thread like i will yours we may get some answers:) good luck

Thanks so much :D mine sounds a bit like your problem, the neons have a white bit on the end of the fins, i have found more have it....but my gourami still does not

Hi

Like you said finrot can be caused by a number of things, usually poor water quality or damage from other fish nipping them, finrot usually starts as a milky white appearance on the fins, which eventually rot the fins from the tip right to the base, if the infection reaches the body of the fish it will likely die or never grow back if treated in time, it could also lead to secondary infections such has fungus.

The first step you should take (if it is finrot) is find out the cause of the problem, and fix it, otherwise it will keep reoccurring.

Do you have any pictures you could share?

hi fidjet hope your finding some answers in sorting your finrot issues.
So far i did water tests that came back fine so thats not an issue but ive been told that maybe it was down to my filter not being big enough for the tank (new fluval 4 added now running in with old fluval 2).
The fact i had a crab in my tank, may of been nipping the other fishhys fins which left them with open wounds where the bacterial infection could take place.
The crab has been rehomed now so all i can do is be patient and keep doing my water changes for a couple of weeks then if there is no improvement ill be dosing with meds again.
First ill be finding out which meds are safest as ive a betta who may be affected by certain meds (some meds mess with there gill system).
Ive also been told using Aquarium safe salt may also help with the finrot issues.

can't really get very good pics but have a look through some of these

i used melafix and found out pretty helpful. but i am not professional at considering sympthoms.

Melafix is a good option, but it might cause problems for the dwarf gourami.

If you could get the dwarf gourami in a separate tank i would say dose the tank with melafix and see how that goes.

I have treated my tank with dwarf gouramis in, in the past with melafix and had no issues at all, but others say it does affect theirs, or you could try a more powerful med like eSHa 2000, or something from the Waterlife range of meds for treating finrot.
