The neon tetra was on his own with the pleco and the sword platy (i thinks thats what they're called) and he was fine, he seemed ok handing out with the other tetra but i just looked in the tank and he has the above symptoms, do i need to lose him to save the others or has he been picked on maybe?

Right ntd, also can get false ntd, the red stripe starts to look bleached out, sometimes starts at the tail region.
Stop shoaling with the others and stays apart from them, they look restless, they also have a cyst on the tummy area that goes to a point.

Ive flushed the offender, its a shame to lose any but it had to be done, he didnt have any cists but he wasnt right and i didnt want to risk killing all of them :-( .

Was there a chance maybe hed just been a bit bullied or something? I let him take his chances in the sewer poor little fella. RIP Mr Neon.

Right then, back to the tank, should i treat it, is it too late? All other fish SEEM ok, but then that fish seemed ok yesterday.

Anyone? Thanks again guys.

You havent flushed him alive that very cruel, no fish deserves that.
If you have i'm so mad.

I was mad, but he might not know that is was wrong what he did, so please in future never do it again.

honestly, if it says someone is a newbie give them the benefit of the doubt. We were all new to fish once. instead of making angry or frowny faces you ought to tell them why they shouldn't flush a fish that is alive.

first off, kaz, you shouldn't flush live fish because all you are doing is making their last few moments as horrible as possible. Should the fish survive the chlorine burns from the toilet water and the stress of flowing through the pipes, they are going to be dumped into the septic tank, along with everything else that gets flushed down the toilet on a regular basis. There is no chance for any fish in that toxic sludge.

second off, yes, there IS a chance it was a case of bullying. You should always seperate any sick fish before taking such drastic actions. what appears to be one thing may turn out to be another, and others will correct me if i'm wrong, but NTD is spread largely by fish eating infected corpses so seperating out the sick fish before it dies would take care of that problem.

Third, your tank is cycling so all your fish will likely begin to show symptoms that appear to be sickness. Make sure you stay on top of your water changes :)
