I bought 4 gouramis yesterday - 1 golden, 1 opaline, 2 neon dwarf blues. He's stopped this now but yesterday he was occasionally swimming on his side. Then he would just straighten up and swim normally again. He has no noticeable abnormalities, is eating fine and all the fish get on well together. Does anyone have any idea why he was doing this just so I know in case he does it again?!
Thanks! :D

Any sign of swelling, bloating, pine-cone scales or stringy poo? Feed a shelled pea incase he has swim bladder problems and watch closely for any further symptoms. Dwarf gouramies are prone to a lot of diseases.

Also watch the opaline and gold gouramies - if they are both male you are likely to get fighting as they mature.

Yes I will feed him a shelled pea then but there has been no signs of swelling, bloating, pine-cone scales or stringy poo! I am not sure how to tell if my other gouramis are male or female - the young lad serving me didn't seem to know either...
Any ideas?

If they are young it can be difficult to tell for certain but if you have some pictures I could try.

Males tend to have pointier and longer un-paired fins and females are much more deep-bodied and look wider when viewed from above.

OK I will post a few pics but it will not be until later... I think I may have a female golden gourami judging by what you said but I'll post the pics later so you can see for yourself. Thanks!
