The bright colors on the blood parrots are injected just like the "painted" glass fish. It is extremely stressing to the fish (imagine if you were randomly grabbed and injected with toxic ink!). It wears out after awhile and fades. Most injected fish don't last very long. Its a disgusting practice. I boycott any store that sells injected fish.

I don't think they are dyed or that, it's because they are a hybrid. Sorry if someone else has said that. I didn't read all the way through!

I don't keep them because they freak me out a bit but I know of people who love them. I also used to think that they had problems with their mouths and eating but then I saw them being fed. WOW, if that's problems I can't imagine if they didnt have them!!

Not all parrot fish have the mouth deformity, in fact the ones that do usually starve to death long before they arive at the shops. A common defect that is seen on parrots being sold in shops is the lack of a tail fin making it difficult for the fish to swim. Blood and jellybean parrots are not injected they are dyed another way, they are dipped into a mild acid solution to remove their slime coating and then dipped into a dye before being dipped into another solution which irritates the fish into growing a new slime coat trapping the dye beneath it

Parrot fish should not be confused with parrot cichlids Hoplarchus psittacus which are a true cichlid species.

I do not agree with the production of man made hybrids especially since there are so many natural fishes that are endangered that the efforts taken to produce hybrids could be used on to bring numbers of these fish back up.

Parrots, like Flowerhorns, are a man made crossing of fish that would not breed in nature. Their production involves numerous cruel and environmentally damaging practices.

There are how ever saltwater parrots that are completely natural.

My LFS had a tank of blood parrots for a while, no body bought them, and they are now turning brown and squishy looking. sort of like rotten fruit .

Poor fish, I cant belive they would dye them.

But im not totally against genetic altering fish, wouldnt it be nice to have a fish thats immune to ICH?

I don't think thats realy possable, besides wheres the profit in that? We need blue fish with two heads and big eyballs, thats the only kind their going to make.

you could theoreticaly make a fish that secreets tea tree oil (the active ingrediant anyways) and that would kill the ich and leave the fish alone and it would protect the other fish in the tank too! :D

Just them cranks turning

Nemo has eaten a few pieces of betta bites. WHew! He does like it when I get in there and feed him. He still takes it in and spits it out a few times, but then the last time he will keep it and swim around chewing on it.
I thought maybe he was a half-moon tail but probably he is just a full veil tail.
I will try another pic of him here.
It doesn't look like this will show up. Anyone else use imagestation? Know why my pics don't show up?
