My sister came round yesterday and commented how all my fish at the moment are boring and when am I going to get some more colourful fish, my parents then agreed with her.

I have a 180 litre tank with
4 peppered cories
3 albino cories
2 bronze cories
1 platy
9 neon tetras
3 glowlights
5 harlequins
6 leopard danios

I was going to get a few rummynose tetras to finish of my tank but when I found a picture nobody was really impressed. They all liked the german rams which I don't think would be any good in my tank because they prefer soft water which we don't have.

Can anybody suggest anything I can add to the tank to give it more colour and is very peaceful.

My tank is planted and I recently added an external filter so my water quality is good, and all my fish get on with no aggression and I would like to keep it like this.

I really need something to shut them all up, maybe a fish that can be kept on his own for a centrepiece.

Any ideas and comments are welcome.

IMO go for polka dot loach they beutifull looking fish and have great charecters and love to play. Mine are always doing odd things like hanging off of leaves or riding the leaves in the current like a rodeo bull, its gotta be seen to bel believed

That sounds a colourful mixture already, perhaps your sister needs to take a more careful look and tune it to what is beautiful about the fish you have already.

Thanks for your ideas I will have to do some research.

I think the reason she thinks the fish look boring is the harlequins and danios are a similar colour but constantly go across the tank in a big group at very fast speeds.

The neons and glowlights are more colouful but tend to stay behind a rock for ages then swim across the tank in a group, this looks good while it is happening but then they hide in a plant or behind a piece of wood so she doesn't really ever see them.

Why not get a few more platys? There are many different types to choose from, and they all very colorful.

I'd second dhoffsett's suggestion, more platies will add colour, and platies are much happier in company. Just do standard gender ratios (all females, or all males- not fewer than 5, or 1 male:2 females).

i agree, go with platies. they are very colorful and to my knowledge, all the color types will school together. PLUS you ought to accomodate that poor lone platy before getting anything else anyhow. They like to be in groups :)

[edit] gah! and just seconds to slow! darn you, dwarf gourami!

I did try to add more platys but I have a male and he has been on his own a long time and wasn't happy when I added them so I had to bring them back.

I didn't want females because of the babies so decided to leave him on his own. He seems happy though and joins in with the cories when they have there mad swims.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

:D Dani, I would suggest getting mollies and/or swordtails if you want some young. :look: Mollies are the easiest to breed and the males will start to breed straight away same with swordtails. If you still want young but not every  month frequently, then I suggest Guppies.{Just remember the ratio of 1male every 2 females].
