I want to make sure my tank is getting enough oxygen. At the moment all it has is a fluval internal pump/filter thingy. When I first bought it, it spewed out bubbles accross the top of the tank which was nice. Now it doesn't, it just moves the water around and no amount of shaking it/removing gunk from it's parts helps. I can't work out how to attach an air stone to it - it doesn't have anywhere to connect the tubing to (the nozzle it spews water out of is big and square). Any suggestions? What are oxygenating tablets like - they scare me a bit because it seems to just be even more chemicals going into the tank?

I ask this because one of my blue rams has a spot on one of his underneath fins - I can't see any more and have added a fungal treatment just in case but I've heard that more aeration can help.

:dunno:

Many thanks

Vicky

So long as the surface of the water is being distrubed (ie; ripples or waves), you don't need to add a bubbler or anything else to oxygenate the water. The primary way oxygen gets into the water is via gas exchange at the surface of the water. Ripples and waves are the best way to accomplish this, and most filters do an adequate job of making it happen. All aerators do is send bubbles up that break at the surface and create the ripples, they don't add oxygen directly.

Extra aeration helps when a fish is in distress but I don't think it does anything to help with diseases.

Hi Vicky, Nice to see another Bristolian on here :good:

Your tank doesn't need a lot of oxygen, a little ripple on the surface is all your fish need.

You won't be able to add an air stone to your filter you will need a pump like THESE

The bigger ( and more expensive ) the pump the bigger air stone you can use with it.

I can't really help with your Ram spot, just keep an eye on it and if it doesn't go or gets worse post on the emergencie site there's nothing these formites haven't seen before. Best of luck.

Thanks guys. I'll leave it as is then - all the rest of the fish seem to be healthy and happy! The spot on the Ram has been there for a while now and I've done 2 lots of treatment - maybe it's a fashion statement!

Fat Boy - it is good to sse another Bristolian on here - are there many of us? Which fish shops do you use - I've only been keeping fish about a year so I'm still feeling my way around where's good and where's not! I've had a bad experience with Almondsbury Garden Centre but I've used The Fish Tank in Whitehall Road a couple of times now and they seem pretty good.

Vicky.

I live in stockwood and have used Almonsbury garden centre but mainly maidenhead aquatics which is in Wyevale garden centre just off the A4 by the park and ride in Brislington.

I see from your profile you support the Bristol reserve team

With ref to the power of the bubble. I had the same problem. I took it back to the shop for a replacement.

I got told that in the bit you unscrew there should be a piece of foam. I not sure there was one in there to start with or if it dissapeared when I clean the filter. But try putting a small piece of sponge in the top bit where the screw goes in. :good:

It might work. I haven't tried it with mine yet, as I brought a new filter.

Vicky, I like the Almondsbury Garden centre, their Malawis are great and all their fish seem in good condition, but on the whole most LFS around Bristol are real poo. I normally go up to Gloucester ( Aquajardin and the Aquatic habitat ) or the Maidenhead place in Swindon.

Geeman, I don't really like the Maidenhead place at Hicks gate, although I've used it many times, their prices are way to high for everything IMO.

As for football well if you follow the GAS and live in Stockwood I really do feel sorry for you old bean... :hyper:

Just kidding..................well the Stockwood bit anyway.

Watch out for the City this season, GJ will get us up.
