Need Ideas For My New 150 Gallon!

So should I not get the gouramis or if I put a lot of pieces of tall driftwood and tall plastic plants to provide shelter for them to get away from the other fish will they be ok?

well if that is the setup you decide to go for then yes i would make plenty of hiding places for them, i would also try to purchase the smallest danios and the largest gouramis you can get to give them more of a chance.

Are the danios the only fish that I would have to worry about with the gouramis? because I could just not get the danios so that I can get the gouramis.

Ps. Red lines are 4 for £20 from Trimar at the moment, I shall be having some next week. They are really really skittish little things though.

WOW thats really good, where i work they are £15 for a 1 2" fish or £20 for 1 4" fish

Thanks for the suggestions and quick repiles, I was thinking of doing something a little less common, like colored blood parrots or discus or some cichlids and fish like that.

Thanks for the reply, I have been on thinkfish.com and I have somewhat an idea for stocking:
Top
-6 giant danios(5 inches)
-4 croaking gouramis(3 inches)
-2 moonlight gouramis (5 1/2 inches)
-2 snakeskin gouramis (8 inches)
-2 pearl gouramis (5 inches)
Total-74 inches

Middle
-3 Boesman's rainbows (4 inches)
-6 Rosy Barbs (5 inches)
-6 Gold Barbs (3 inches)
-1 Red tail black shark (5 inches)
-2 firemouths(6 inches)
Total-77 inches

Bottom
Undecided( No clown loaches they get to big)

So, so far I will have 151 inches of fish when everything is fully grown. Do you think this is overstocked or will I be able to get away with it because of the filtration? Thanks for all of the help.
Def not overstocked. :good:

What about a plec of some sort for the algae, and a nice group of corys?

Tell me about it. Just don't all you gits buy them all up before I have a chance to please! Tank bred too which is nice for the conscience!

Wow, Jules H-T I just read your diary on your tank and it is great. I love the big wood in the middle of your tank, you mentioned that you thought that it was used for lizards, is it cheaper to buy wood used for lizards because I am going to be using a lot of wood. Thanks for linking to that your tank is awesome.

I just looked on petsmart.com to see if it is cheaper to buy wood used for reptiles than it is to buy wood used for fish and it is much cheaper. You can buy a pack of 5 large pieces of driftwood that measure 10 inches long x 2.5 inches wide for $12.69. I think I will buy this so that I can give some hiding spots for my gouramis and I can use the driftwood that I already have. Here is the link to the driftwood for $12.69:

Glad you like the tank. Good luck with yours.

Most of my wood is normal bogwood/mopani that I've just picked up over the years. The massive branch I was just at a large LFS and grabbed it out of a big bucket and it wasn't until I was on the way home that I saw an iguana on the back of the price ticket! I decided to risk it, but please note mate, that I have told you what I have done, not told you that it's OK to do it yourself- whatever you put in is ultimately your responsibility (although were it my tank and my responsibility I'd personally use the wood you've selected)!

It floated for weeks and weeks and probably months as it was very very dry, and where it was sticking out of the water lots of little flies started living. They didn't ever leave their little island though, I felt quite guilty when it sank eventually!

The rocks I got from a garden center, and they are slate rocks. £3 each they cost and there are 8 of them, all somewhere between house brick and breeze block size.

When you do the decor make sure the rocks or piles of rocks are based on the glass bottom of the tank, not on the sand. You do lose a lot of visible rocks which is a bit of a disappointment, but I've been amazed how much movement of the sand there has been in just under a week- a rock stack directly on the sand would have collapsed for sure and possibly put 20 kilos of rocks into the glass. Must remember to thank CFC for that little nugget, read many moons ago!

Thanks. What I do to all of my driftwood that wont sink is I drill a large piece of slate to the bottom of them and than bury the slate rock with sand/gravel and it weighs it right down! I think after seeing your tank I will add some slate rocks, because they looked really nice and I think I will buy that pack of 5 pieces of driftwood that I linked to and then I have tons of plastic plants, I will add a few of the taller ones for cover for the gouramis.

I was looking into lighting for this tank. The tank comes with 2 3 foot lighting fixtures, each fixture holding 2 bulbs. I was thinking that the lights in the front would be normal color but I think it would be cool to use blue/red or a black light for the back 2 lights. What do you guys think about this? Has anybody done this if so do you have pictures? This tank is going to be real cool the lights are going to be hooked up to a remote control and I am going to have the tank plumbed so that it fills itself and all I have to do is drain it on my own. Thanks everyone for all of the helpful suggestions so far.

Also about heating, how many watts or heaters do you think I need. I have a 200watt eheim heater and a 150watt Top fin heater. Is this enough? If not, how many more watts would you recommend? Also what would you recommend for a background(not 3-d)? I am going to the lfs tommorow and am trying to figure out what I need. Sorry for all of the questions and thanks again.
