Hello everyone, I have a 72g stocked with 7 angels (large), 6 clown loaches, 4 bosemani rainbows, 2 parrots, and 1 bristlenose plec. The tank is filtered with a aqua clear 500 and a eheim wet/dry. But my problem that i recently noticed over night was my angels are all seemed stressed out hanging out at the very top with closed tail fins. They seem to have small spots of discoloration over their bodies under the tank lights but it doesnt seem like fungus. I breed these guys myself and would hate to lose them. So if anyone could please let me know what might be wrong and how to cure them would be greatly appreciated. Oh and they are still eating right now but not as active as they used to be. The ph is 7.0 and ammonia level is at 0ppm, temp is around 80 or 82f.

How often do you change water, and how much? Are they eating slower than usual? Any cleaners or household work out of the usual, such as painting? Are you on a municipal water source, and where (lake, river, well) does the water originate from? If it is surface or well water have you had an excess of precipitation lately? What water conditioner (dechlorinator) are you using to treat the replacement water, and how much?

The spots point towards one direction, the slowing down & hanging towards the top of the tank points towards another. Shimmery, almost gold looking specks indicate velvet, this will often affect gill function. Slowing down, especially in th eating department, and hiding in one area indicates an internal protizoan, the spots may be incidental. Sometimes hanging towards the surface for no apparent reason could be airborne household products, or a problem with your water supply.

I have a 72 bow, with one large oscar, nice tank. BTW, haven't seen you around these parts for a while, welcome back, hope we can sort this out for you.

thank you for you response Tolak, I change my water once a week and its usually about 90%. I just changed the water on sunday. These guys are used to this because thats how they were raised for w/c (at least the angels are). As far as the water source goes, I live in memphis so should not be any problem there, water comes from aquaduct. No paint or aresol might have contaminated the water, but these guys are hangin out behind driftwood and towards bottom of the tank. one of the angels eyes are literally bulging out from the head. I use prime as my water conditioner, one cap full. I just put sum frozen brine shrimp into the tank and this usually causes the angels to get extrememly excited but they didnt even budge so yes eating processes have slowed down. should i do another w/c to be on the safe side?

There was a lot of rain a couple of weeks back, this tends to play havoc with water supplies. Drinking water companies are concerned with the health of humans, they could care less about an aquarium full of fish. They will jack up disinfectants (chlorine, chloramine) if there is any doubt about the safety of the water supply. This is harmless to humans, but means you must adjust your water treatment, dechlorinator, accordingly.

Your water source is well water; http://gwi.memphis.edu/history/history.htm

Well water starts off as ground water, and more or less percolates down. When it does this it can bring down other things with it, most notably fertilizers used in agriculture. Fertilizers will cause nitrate to appear in tap water. This is usually no big deal, unless it rains heavily in a more rural area, and is often more seasonal.

I would do a largish water change, and double up on Prime. This will cause no damage to the fish, I do it on a regular basis thanks to my water supply. Prime also takes care of heavy metals, another common well water problem.

Tolak, Today i just noticed that towards the top fin of some of the angels and on the very rear fin (tail) i saw some internal blood where the fins start to come off of the body. also on the rear fin and bottom whiskers the blood looks almost as if it was going to drip. " looks as though water about to drip off a end of a string" Also some of the angels are starting to almost "peel" losing some of their silver and black coloration. What should I do, Why are the other fish not affected?
