new to the forums hi everyone! anywho im getting a 75g tank and i want to start a saltwater tank. i was just wondering if it is possible to mix live sand and live rock with dead live rock and sand. i know a few people that had a saltwater tank and due to katrina everything pretty much died and they are not planning to go saltwater anymore

Yes that's possible. You will have to be careful when adding the 'dead' rock to the tank as it will create a massive Ammonia spike when all the dead organisms on the rock start to decay so I would suggest setting the tank up and getting all the 'dead' rock and sand you can in there first, let the tank cycle and the rock 'cure', before adding and new live rock or live sand.

i was thinking of getting 1/3 cruched coral and 2/3 live sand for my tank and i want to do the same with rocks 1/3 base and 2/3 live

Hi and welcome.
Yes its possible to mix the 2. The advice given is how i would attempt to mix the 2 in a new system.

I don't see an issue with that as long as you don't exceed the bioload capabilities of the system and ensure that any live rock added once the tank is set up is fully cycled.

Yeah, you're taking after me :). I too used a significant amount of dead and dried baserock in addition to LR to start my tank. Like aqua said, just watch your bioload, go slow, and everything should be ok.

i was thinking about adding everything all at once the sand water and rocks. would that be ok if it was 50/50 ration of everything?
