A little over a week ago I had a nitrite spike due to the fact that I overcleaned my 10 gallon tank AND put in a new filter (bio-bag). Finally my nitrite is down to .25

I lost one dwarf gourami due to this. I added 2 about 2 weeks ago. The one that died seemed sickly from the time I added him. Luckily, I still have the rest of my fish. 3 danios, 2 mollies, and 1 dwarf gourami.

Last night I noticed my fancy danio ( is long and slender with longer fins) looked like both eyes were popping out and his tail looks ragged. This morning one eye is better, other white and puffed out.

Went to store and they gave me Aquaticure amoxicillin 250 mg capsules. They told me to remove the carbon from the filter. This scares me as I had the nitrite problem. What will happen if I remove the filter ? Should I set it in the tank somewhere ? The only thing left in the filter will be a small mesh like square (not sure what it is called).

Unfortunately I do not have a hospital tank. How will this affect the other fish ? Also, Should I do a water change before adding the meds ? Like I said I am just getting my water levels back to normal, so I am scared  .

Thank you

The mesh thing is holding bacteria, as so does the gravel the walls of your tank and anything touching the water, like the inside of your filter. Now as you are going to be treating with a bacterial medication, you have to be careful this doesn't throw off your balance of cycling. Just be sure to keep a close eye on your levels and following medicating directions. You have to remove carbon from your filter else it does take the medication out of your tank and therefore being no point to medicating.

How big is your tank? In my opinion you need to treat whatever is causing more destruction in your tank first, and then deal with the second issue next. The fact that you are showing a nitrite reading would seem that you havent cycled your tank as yet. How long has it been running for and how many fish are in there now?

Re the carbon - dont worry about this. All it does is remove meds from the water and also remove any colourant from the water.

My tank is a 10 gallon with 3 danios, one gourami, and 2 mollies. My tank WAS cycled but I threw it off somehow by vaccuming the heck out of it, cleaning the pump/filters and a huge water change as I thought it was caused by ammonia but was opposite.

long story, nightmare !

Tank is about 10-12 weeks old.

I am looking for a 50 gallon or bigger as of now. Now that I realize how much more difficult it is to maintain a 10 gallon, plus want happier fishies.
