A few months ago I agreed to adopt a "male convict" which was going to be flushed as he attacked community fish. On arrrival he turned out to be some kind of Malawi type, definitely African not SA cichlid. Basically he looks like M gresheiki but dorsal and tail fins are pale yellow not orange and stripes more pronounced like cons.Looks bluish sometimes. Has two long dark pectoral fins and 3 egg spots on tail.He was a feisty little fellow, staring down cons twice his size and taking on 3 young jewels at once as a 3cm youngster, Now whe's growing bigger, (roughly jewel size but thinner, more slimline)he's chasing tankmates but nothing vicious just the usual fun=to-watch cichlid antics. However I need to ID him and find out how big he will eventually be as I don't want him to kill off my jewels and female cons. He's OK so far as it's a 4ft tank with lots of hiding places. I would like to keep him if possible as he's a real character and I've grown fond of him but if he's likely to grow much bigger and turn into a killer he will have to be rehomed ASAP.

Forgot to mention,he looks bluish all over at night and has tiny fluorescent turquoise spot on gill covers.
Sorry no photos as he moves too fast for phone camera.
Any ideas anyone? I'm just concerned in case he turns into a super aggressive 8in monster soon and kills tnakmates. Yes, I know you shouldn't mix African and SA cichlids (hence my enquiry)but this was an emergency as no one else wanted him

Hi,

This looks just like our Tropheops red fin. Dont let the name deceive! They go from being white one day, to stripey the next, then with yellow and then sometime turquoise lines on thier fins. Looks just like ours - I wouldnt want to say 100% that it is, but the resembelance is uncanny.
