Hey guys I bought a calvus cichlid from my local BigAls which was labled yellow Lamp. compressiceps. I did so reaserch and looked around on the web for juvenile yellow calvus cichlids but they look more pale and yellow comopared to the one I have. My calvus has more of a dark body with only the face displaying the dominant gold/yellow colouration. Is my juvenile calvus true yellow calvus or is it a gold head and which of the two is more rare? , just wanted to know out of cariousity.

If it was labelled a comp then it is a comp, not a calvus. Sounds like a goldhead comp to me. Do you have a pic?

Yeah but I dont see the attachment button anymmore. The button use to be under the message box but its nolonger there.

Sorry i can help with pic, i used to paste the img codes in.
You will be able to tell what you have by the shape of the fish. If its a compressiceps, the shape of the fish will be (compressed), so it will be shorter and higher looking than a calvus, if that makes sense.

It has a long snout with brown vertical bars down its side. As for finnage, they are very high when flared out. It has the body of the fish in the first link but the head in the second link.Is it possible that it could be a hybrid between a black ink fin calvus and a gold head compressiceps? The others inside of the tank were all yellow compared to this one.My link

They can crossbreed yes but i really doubt that they would get sold on. This is my male goldhead flaired up.

Wow, nice gold comp. you have there is the one under the rocks a female? Getting a look at yours I positive mine is most likely a gold head comp. as well. Thanks for the ID help, Should I contact the store to notify them that I was sold the wrong fish? Either way I will keep him though, little guy has grown on me. I mostly hand feed him to try to train him to swim to the surface which is proving to be a susccess so for, but I'll probally stop after he gets bigger and the teeth start to come in. A. Comps. and A. Calvus remind me of lion fish due to the patterning and shape subtract the finnage, wonder if there is any relation.

Dom- yes that is the female under the rocks but unfortunately they dont get on. Yes they do get some teeth on them but they take a long time to grow. :)

malawi- cheers, hes in a 55g.
