my moms isnt agreeing with me at all, even tho she dosnt touch or hardly looks at my tanks which are in my room. she wont even let my change my 20 gallon tank into a freaking planted tank!! i need to change her mind some how, can anyone help me point out the great things of a plantet tank??

lol for planted tank u gonna need alot of stuff, but i quess u cud ge themm

planted tanks make tanks look nice

and when they grow wildfire for you like java moss, riccia, swords and dwarf saggs.. u could sell them online to make money

If you go with a low tech planted tank (less than 2wpg lights with no CO2) then you can just get easy growing, low light plants. That's all you need.

Planted tanks help take in ammonia and nitrates and sometimes nitrites.

Planted tanks look more natural.

I have 2 planted tanks, both have RCS (Red Cherry Shrimps), amanos, and bamboo shrimp. All I do is just perform water changes. I don't have to worry about gravel vacs, since the shrimps eat the detritus i the tank.

heeh thanks guys, im gonna keep bringing it up for the next week or so to see if she gives in, but i dont get it, it not like im getting another tank!! grr she makes me mad sometimes! but i guess that her job! :p

Depending on where you are one of us could send you a few easy fast growing plants, dont see how she could object to that, and she would see how much better a tank looks with live plants.

She is probably just worried it'll cost money. Get on some local fish forums or clubs. If you can scoop some low light plants for free she may not mind. Maybe she is worried about how much time it'll take. Do you spend alot of time on your tanks now? You can tell her that plants eliminate some regular maintenance.

I think the important thing is try to find out her reasons for being against the switch and then figure out a way to address her concerns.

Planted tanks can certainly cost a lot to setup, and can require a lot of maintenance. Most parents would worry about the cost so it'll be hard to convince them.
What about showing them this forum and let them take a look at some of the tanks. Tell them this is what you want to do with your tank.
A nice green tank does look a lot better than an empty tank.

Hmm, well, possibly controversial, but how often do you do a water change? With enough plants, you may be able to cut this down a bit as the plants will take up waste: imagine if you didn't have to trudge up and down to your room as often when changing water?

Plus planted tanks can look beautiful, leave some magazine pictures around with planted tanks in?

Planted tanks are also educational. Biology, chemistry, physics, art , design, technology - it has them all. My daughters have experienced photosynthesis first hand when seeing pearling riccia etc. for example. A valuable lesson IMO.

I am a part time tuition tutor, everytime my students come to my house they will first gather in front of my planted tank. From there I will explain to them how photosynthesis works, what is CO2, oxygen, etc.

They showed more interest compared to learning all this from book.

From time to time they will pop up some very interesting questions and from there they learn...

It is not just looks nice but very educative as well.

The same thing happened to my neighbours' children...

;)
