My regular black tetra is attacking my biggest long finned black tetra which is huge compared to him and the regular tetra is chasing him so much that the biggest tetra is at the top of the tank leaning sideways and breathing heavily. Why are they fighting and should I take the chasing tetra out so as to not stress the long finned tetra any more?

Seperate them as the stressed one is going to get sick, you might have to think of taking one back to the lfs.

How many tetras are in the tank? Tetras are schooling fish and will fight, resulting in one bully and one weaker, if there is nothing to settle out the aggression.

There are 3 in thier and what is wierd is the smaller one is attacking the big one. But they aren't doing it now what I did was take the attacker out for about 15 mins then reintroduced him now they stopped.

Need to be in bigger shoals to cut the aggression out, shoaling fish no less than six is advised.

Could it be the bigger one is female and the smaller one is male? Because theres not enough females the male will keep going for the female. You need to try and get more females to help spread out the aggression.

I agree separate them and think about taking one back to the lfs. It probably is a mismatch in temperament. Happens.

How do you tell a male from a female? And like I said it stopped so I don't think I have to worry about that. And in about 2 to 3 weeks their will be six in thier. And I don't think I will return any of my fish I like them to much and they stopped so I won't worry until after I get all six and they do it again.

The males are small and thin and the females are a lot bigger and plump.

Well I think the big long finned tetra that was being attacked is a male and the attacker may also be a male or a female.

In that case then you need to get more tetras or take the aggressor back to the store. Getting more tetras wont mean he will leave it alone though. if it was mine i would take him back and get 3 others, and hope they get along.
Maybe its the long fins attracting the other to attack :dunno:
