I wonder if anyone can help, my Bristlenose catfish is ill and I don't know what's wrong or how to treat it.

This is him, as you can see he's got some sort of whiter patches and sores.

We had a spot of white spot recently which was then followed by some fungal infection, which cleared up on the one other fish, could the Bristlenose's problem be funagal?

BTW the other fish is one of my baby Laetacara dorsigera

Much appreciated

Oh poor little fellow, that looks quite bad. Looks like septicaemia to me. I would still treat for internal bacterial infection. but it may be a last ditch attempt.

I would agree with the septiceamia. Get your water tested to make sure the params are all good and keep the bottom of the tank well hoovered. Is he eating ok? Maybe add some weighted cucumber or food with garlic in it if he isnt feeding well. Peas as well may be eaten.

looks like an ulceration to me. the fungus problem was most likely the result of an opportunistic pathogen taking advantage of the wounds left by ich.

here is a site that i have found very helpful in diagnosing issues. photos and brief descriptions.

He's not in good shape at all.
Septicemia need to act fast as it a killer, bacterial med.
Can you issolate him as he's in a bad way.
plus septicemia can leech from the fish into the tank.
Need tank size in gallon or litres.
How many fish and which type.
And water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Okay, this isn't sounding too positive :-(

I've isolated him in another tank, with tonic salt and a dose of internal anti-bacterial medicine. I've also put in the blind cave fish as he's showing a slight reddening at his doral and anal fin.

I'm not sure what could've caused this as the water is fine - no amonia or nitrite and nitrates are between 20 and 40 depending where in the week we are. PH is gradually decreasing from about 7.8 now to 7.2(ish) as we've recently started using R.O. water.

The only thing I can think of is that I left the water change for a week (about two weeks ago) as we were changing to a bigger tank and need as much bateria as necessary but nitrates didn't spike much.

We've got lots of small fish about 14" worth (14x1") and have recently upgraded from a 55L to a 140L as they will grow.

Currently there are -

6x Red Breasted Acara (Cichlids)
2x Neon Blue Dwarf Gourami
1x Bristlenose Catfish
1x Ansistrus L150 (he's a bit larger at 3")
1x Apple Snail
1x Shrimp
1x Blind Cave Fish
1x Dwarf Otto
1x Neon Goby(?) algae eater

I appreciate all the help he guys (and gals)

Ian

Unfortunately, Digger the bristlenose catfish is no longer with us. I'm pretty sure it was septicaemia as you guys informed but, but it's very difficult to cure (if not impossible) at that stage.

I've got another fish in the hospital tank, my blind cave fish, as one of the symptoms of septicaemia is reddening at the joint of fins and body. Now I'm not sure if I was being paranoid and he already had this as it's been a couple weeks and he's showing no further signs. I'm considering putting him back in the main tank in another week or so, but am unsure.

Anyhows thanks for all of your help, it's been much appreciated.

Sorry to hear this. Poor little thing. I would treat the isolated fish for internal bacterial infection, just in case.
