Hi everyone im new to Tropical Fishkeeping been interested for a long time, have wanted a tropical fish tank for ages but could never afford one as i had too many debts (all under control now)!!
Me and the missus were shopping in Leigh and we had a bit of money left over after paying for our holiday to Prague, so on the spare of the moment she decided she wanted a small fish tank in her room!!! Went to the local Pet Shop and bought a Rena Kid Maxi Light because it looked nice and had all the basic stuff included with it.
Now for the dilemma she saw some crabs in a pet shop a few weeks before we bought the tank and loved them, so she wants Crabs!!!!!!!!!
(stop giggling)
The crabs she saw where i think Red Crabs now ive done some research and ive found 2 important things
1 They need somewhere to 'land'
2 This was taken directly from the Practical Fishkeeping website
"Temperament: Red crabs will catch small fish and eat them if they can.
Do not keep them with bottom dwellers, fish with long fins, or small species - in fact always exercise caution when mixing them with any fish..."
Which leads me to my dilemmas because of the size of the tank i need an ornament that will sit flat against the back or more preferable the side of the tank (because i dont want the ornament taking over the whole tank) for the crabs to climb up and be out of the water when they want to be.
The second reason i dont want it to take over the tank is that seeing as i paid half the cost i want some say as to what fish go in it. Have wanted a Siamese Fighting Fish for ages but cant have 1 because the back of the tank is mirrored and it would go crazy every time it saw its refection and would probably kill itself!!!
Anyway my 2 questions are
1 Does anyone know of such an ornament? or alternatively if i need 1 at all? ive heard that some people have kept red crabs for ages under water and they have been fine!
2 What nice looking fish would be compatible with Red Crabs? I want some sort of Tetra (Neon or Fire) and a few other types dont want too many! Only gonna be getting 2 Crabs maybe 3 at the most!!
Anyway thanks for your time in reading through all this hope you can help me from getting grief off the missus!!!
