Im going to the pet shop in about an hour so if I can get a quick reply it would be good.

I have a 120 litre tank with 3 platies and 6 cardinals. I do 15%-25% water changes a week. Its been up and running for about 2 months. Anyway, about a week ago a noticed nothing a little weird on my platys tail but busy days made it slip my mind. Now I have a platy with some sort of fungal infection and a cardinal getting the same thing but also has pinecone scales.

Should I get protizin? Its the only thing I know of and I used it once before when I had clown loach that got white spot.

I did a 30%ish water change this morning when I discovered the poor cardinal looking sorry for itself. I have also turned the heating up to 82. I know when reptiles get sick heat helps, so I just assumed it would here to, although its not deathy warm or anything.

Will I be ok with protizin. Ahhh i feel so sorry for the poor thing, I see them as little pets, no different from my snakes or dogs, so I dont like to see them in and discomfort/pain.

Any help?

Nobody cares about my fishies! I got some protizin... im just going to use that and see what happens. It seems fungal so just have to see.

OK is the water meant to be a stained blueish colour? Its only slightly but enough to notice.

Was the med blue, if so not to worry, with the filter running it will clear, have you taken the carbon out of the filter before you added the med?

Yeah it was deep blue and its just left the water with a blue tinge so thats cool then. I took the carbon out this morning when I did the waterchange so thats fine.

I guess I just dose as it says and wait it out. Should I not do any W/C in this time?

Thanks

The waterlife med does send the water blue.

What are your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

If the fungus is fluffy like cotton wool it's columnaris and it's bacterial.
If it is columnaris you shouldn't of raised the temp.

Once scales stick out last stage of dropsy organ failure.
Does the fish look bloated.

Never add meds till you know what you are treating for. It can do more harm than good.

Nah its not the cotton wool type, its mor like someting eaten away part of the fin and its gone white, only comparison I can think of is something like ringworm, although not sure if thats helpful as I have never seen that in person either lol Also the cadrinal was a little round eairler but seems to have deflated a little, hes breathing has slowed a little as it was rapid eairler, and he has all hes balance and is still eating, but yeah I assumed he wouldn't make it very far.

Do you mean holes in the fins.
You will need to treat with a bacterial med.

Nah its not holes, its so hard to describe, I spent about an hour trying to get a pic but the platy is to fast. Now it seems the cardinal is getting worse, the poor thing seems to be swiming in circles???

I will just ask you some questions then.
Any growth on the fins that look like a cluster of eggs or cauliflower.
Any worms on the fins with a y shaped tail.
Any spots on the fins, if so how big, what colour.

Fins that that are eaten away and white is bacterial finrot.

Swimming in circles can mean the fish is dying, ph shock, bad water quality, parasites, internal parasites, toxins.

Ok its just 1 of the platys and 1 cardinal that are showing any signs of illness. The platy is normal but has a white smudge on its tail, it was slightly raised but seems to have gone down a little already. The cardinal has regainsed balance and now im thinking its funny swimming was just the shock of the light coming on. Although its pineconeing may be getting worse.

Its defo not finrot and im pretty sure there is no whitespot. Im working on a pic as im rubbish at explaining.

Would it hurt me treating for a bacterial aswell?

Can you issolate the fish with dropsy. If a fish pecks at its dead body it can pass on that way.

Once scales stick out fish rarely make it.
All you can do is use a bacterial med. and epson salt baths to help draw the fluids out.

I have a 12 gallon tank or a bucket I could set up as a hospital tank but I have just had a look around and I cant see the sick cardinal, Im going to have a good look around with the net now and see if its just hiding in something. He was off of his food yesterday which is why I think he may have died. The tank has ALOT of snails so hopefully if he has died, they have gotten to the body first.

The platy is looking a little better, still very active and eating well, but the white marks are turning a little darker not sure what that means.

I will see if I can get to a pet shop today and look for a med for bacterial infections. Is there a recommended brand? I was looking yesterday and there are a few that treat all sorts of different bacterial illnesses, so seeing as I have no idea what they have I think I will just use one of those.

Also thanks for being so much help, I dont often have sick fish so Im clueless.

OK i found him. He had died, is it normal for all the scales to go back into place? He wasn't all pineconey anymore. He had one huge buldgy eye and a yellow belly area.

He was completely untouched though as the filter made him get stuck in some thick plants so he was fully intact. Hopefully thats it for a deaths then.
