First Off---Hey All! :D I am new to this forum as of today.
So I have 1 cichlid and 2 Gourami's. This is the second time that my cichlid has gotten ich. I have treated it the first time and began treating again tonight when I noticed it. But I am just baffled as to why he has gotten it twice. The other fish are fine, he seems to be the only one getting it. Any advice?
Also, about the Gourami's - One's eye is totally looking glassed over. My mother-in-law says it's "glass-eye", but I got online to research it and didn't find anything about it. I'm a noob in the fish world. I have only had my 10 gal tank now for 4 months. These are the first problems I've had.

I would appreciate any help/advice. I feel bad for my lil fishy :( . He looks horrible.

The two problems are linked - poor water quality stresses the fish & ick manages to jump in. The gourami has cloudy eye - plenty of info around once you know what to search for ;)
What sort of cichlid do you have & what gouramis?
What filter do you have & how much water do you change & how often?
When are you getting another tank as I doubt you fish will live together for long?

I had an black convict cichlid. :( As of last night, he did die after I posted.
I have a Top Fin filter in my 10 gal tank.
I change about 30-50% of the water every 2 weeks.
I'd like to get a 55 gal, but financially--it's not possible for a while. My fiance and I are looking for a house, so I have to save up everything. Plus that would be a pain in the behind to move from one house to another.

Thanks for the help. I will surely research cloudy eye and get it fixed.

As for the water, should I clean the entire tank and start again with completely new water?
Sggestions from all would be much appreciated. Thanks again.
;)

Is the eye also swollen? If it is, it will be pop-eye, you'll find lots of information on the internet and is it is treatable with medication. I had a red-tailed black shark with pop-eye and following treatment, he recovered but un-treated fish can lose sight in that eye.

Good luck

Well, it's not swollen, just very cloudy..like there is a film over it. I am thinking that it is cloudy eye. Gotta go to the store and get the right medication for it.
I have just cleaned the entire 10 gal placed the 2 surviving fish (the other died last night) in a separate tank. Hopefully after treating the cloudy eyed one--they will be okay  . I think the problems all stemed from my cichlid getting Ick. I treated the tank and 7 days later my 2 plecostemous' died. Then last night my cichlid past. Like I said, I am a noob...I've only been doing this for 4 months or so.

~Thanks~

It sounds like you are overcleaning the tank. You have to build up colonies of friendly bacteria in the filter to break down the fishes wastes. These bacteria are killed by chlorine in tapwater which is why you have to use water conditioners. The filter pads or sponges only need a rinse in water taken from the tank every few weeks. What water conditioner have you got?
Each time you "cleaned the entire 10 gal " you are starting again from scratch.
If you get your water quality right the gourami's eye should get better without medication.
Instead of treatments please buy some test kits -a multitest strip pack + and ammonia test OR a mini master set are the cheapest ways to go.
Before you go out put a glass of tapwater at the side of the tank. When you get back, test this and post the readings here.
This will save you a lot of money & a lot of fish.

My water conditioner is by Jungle (for Water Quality). No-this is the first time I have cleaned the ENTIRE tank. Only because my cichlid and plecostemous' died. Yeah, I have the water set out like you said and I am getting ready to go to the store. I wont get any medications, I just needed new rocks.
I do own some test kits so I will run the tests when I get back and post the readings when I return.
Thanks so much Sue. You have been a big help. Thanks Ferris.

We shall see....

You want to be careful with the fish you are putting in that 10 gallon aswell, i can't think of any plecs that can be kept in a tank that small and if its a common or sailfin plec, they both grow bigger than the tank itself. No Cichlids should really be kept in a 10 gal either, i'm sorry to say i think you're problems may stem from overstocking the tank, which in turn pollutes the water. :/

Okay. So I have the tank up and running waiting for the water to be completely conditioned...new rocks, clean everything. Meanwhile my 2 Gourami's are in a separate tank. I will test the water in an hour and see how its going.
My Gourami's look to have some fin damage or could have Ick right now.
Will that defeat the purpose of me cleaning the tank?
Could the Ick be cured without treatment in this new water?

-Noob-

The tank cleaning won't have helped as you are now putting the fish into a brand new cycling tank. I would keep a bucket of prepared water by the side of the tank ready to change water as soon as ammonia & then nitrite gets to the second reading on your chart.
What gouramis are they? The only common ones suitable for a ten gallon are dwarfs & honeys & these are not hardy for cycling.
Do you know anyone with a mature tank? If you can get some squeezings from a mature filter it will really help your fish.
They may have ick, they may not. Lets get the water good & only treat them if spots show up.

some one correct me if i'm wrong but what about the water conditions shouldnt it be hard and alkaline for the cichlid and soft and acidic for the gouramis which i assume he was living in the gouramis water which wouldnt be to healthy for him?

Actually this is in the wrong section as the late cichlid was a convict - New World/soft water..
