i am really freaking out here.please help.i just got this amazing present for my 15th birthday, a fish tank full of fish and its new.after years of begging my mom decided to allow me to trade my rabbits for fishes; as a suprise.I came home one evening and my rabbits' house was gone and instead there was a medium size fish tank full of fish in its place.i was really happy and excited before the horridable truth kicked in.i had a tank full of fish ,which was my ultimate dream, but i have no idea what to do with them.i dont know what breed they are or what they eat or how to take care of them.please help.i can finally persue my interest but i am in a jumbled mess.i really want these fishes and i really want to get to know more of my new hobby so please if any one is out there with a kind heart tell me what to do.PLEASE!!!

pics of the tank and fish would start so we can at least tell you the breed and what they require

Don't panic.

The first, most important thing to remember is; fish need clean water. Every day, and any time your fish look 'odd', do a big water change. Drain most of the water out of the tank, leaving just enough for the fish to swim upright, and then refill with warm, dechlorinated water.

That should keep your fish safe while you learn all the other things you need to know. The next thing you need is a test kit; one that uses tablets or liquids and test tubes. You need kits for ammonia and nitrite at the moment, but if you can get one of the API or Nutrafin master test kits, that would be best.

How big is your tank, what kind of filter does it have and do you know the names of any of the fish? If you want to post pics, you need to upload them to a hosting site, like Photobucket or Flickr first, and put the IMG code in your post.

how big is the tank? how many fish? we need details and we promise to help as best as we can!

your basically asking for to know everything about fish? just know the basics then go buy yourself a book.

the nitrogen cycle> very important to understand

a cycled tank> very important to know the benefits of a cycled tank which yours definately wont be seems you came home one day and found a tank with fish in it! so seems as your tank isnt cycled, dont be suprised if you lose some of your fish

fish tank bacteria> the bacteria that live in your tank, mainly the filters, play a very important role in keeping your tank clean and healthy to understand this you must first understand the nitrogen cycle

water changes> understand how to vaccum your gravel and how much water to change and on what basis?

excess feeding> fish will always appear hungry and overfeeding them is a common cause of death, as the uneaten food decays and pollutes the tank. again it will benefit your understanding of this if you understand the nitrogen cycle

preventing and treating disease> if you spot a disease, act fast!

this is just the very basics im afraid. keeping fish isnt just a hobby, its a lifestyle. good luck! :)
