I just got a power compact light fixture which has 2 65 watt bulbs. I noticed that my tank temp has increased and I think it's due to the heat coming from the bulbs. I don't have a fan for it and it's not up on legs. Do you think I should prop the fixture up so it's a little further away from the tank? has this every happened to you?

thanks!

Temp is between 84 and 86 F and I usually keep it between 80-82 F. I turned the fixture off for now. There's a couple of angels in there and some neons and a pleco. My apartment is getting really warm though. The weather just started getting nice here and it's a hot day and I don't have the AC going yet so i don't know if that is affecting the temp. :dunno:

what fixture is it?
power compact lighting. It puts off alot of light and alot of heat. Think i may try and mount a fan on the wall blowing at it. I know these things come with fans and legs. I just couldn't afford it.

Hey Gaya! Long time no post no?

Many of those high power compact lights have stands you can buy from your lfs for a reasonable price. That should help.

It says catalina aquarium on it. I threw away the box with out even checking out the company name or anything. I was just so excited to get it up and going.

Hi miagi! i've had such a busy semester. I haven't been able to come on as much as i would like.

I should just go buy the legs. I was being cheap. I've been poking around my apartment today trying to figure out what I could use to make "make shift" legs but i have no idea. I'm just gonna have to bight the bullet and get legs, and a fan as well. I only have one light on right now and it's still pretty darn hot.

Hi Gaya..just curious..why do you otherwise run your tank so warm? If your heater is set to 80-82, why don't you drop the set point to 75? Those power compacts will need a fan and the legs may help a little. If you really need that amount of wattage and temps don't come down, I think the only way to cool that tank will be a chiller. SH

It's not that I run the tanks warm. It's my apartment. It's liek a little oven. Even in the winter it's really warm. I have no control over my heat. I don't even have the heaters on right now. The heaters stay in the 78-79 region. But at this time of the year it doesn't matter how i set them. I gotta get my AC going. Though I don't like running it all the time as it uses up so much energy.
