Surfing around the web I stumbled upon this page - Elmers small community fish

To my newbie eyes, this seems to be a great guide which makes my fish choices much simpler. To your eyes, does the advice or fish grouping seem okay?

It's a decent guide. The Pleco and Clown Loach will get too large for a 10 gallon tank. I noticed it doesn't say how many you can put in there. How big is your tank ?

Most of the fish on there look compatible. I would not add banjo catfish to any tank with small fish because they will eat them.
The list has lots of different fishes on it. You cannot add all of those fishes to the tank. They are a guide to what you can add.
eg: you might add 6 neon & 6 black phantom tetras, a honey dwarf gourami, some corydoras catfish and a couple of shrimp.

I don't plan on having any cats or plecs and I know I can't have too many different types of fish.

Planning on having 6 zebra, 6 neons and a few others... maybe some ghost shrimp in there too.
